A stunning century by opener Yashasvi Jaiswal helped Team India firmly take the upper hand on Day 3 of the Oval Test match. His dominant performance helped shape India’s path toward a possible victory on Day 4.
After staying unbeaten on 51 at the end of Day 2, Jaiswal picked up where he left off. He played a powerful innings on Day 3 and went on to score a superb century. This marked his sixth Test hundred and second of the series, as he finished the series exactly how he started it — with a century.
Rohit Sharma’s Advice Boosted Jaiswal’s Confidence
While Jaiswal was batting at the Oval, the cameras caught a familiar face in the crowd — former India Test captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit, who has been a major figure in Jaiswal’s cricket journey, offered some key advice before the young batter went out to bat.
In the post-day press conference, Jaiswal shared what Rohit had told him.
“He told me to hang in there and bat long,” said the left-hander.
Jaiswal may not have gone on to play a massive innings beyond his 118 runs, but his contribution was exactly what India needed at that moment. His knock gave India a clear edge and could well be the deciding factor in this Test match.
Ups and Downs, But Big Lessons for Jaiswal
This Test series has been a roller-coaster ride for Jaiswal. At times, he impressed with standout performances. On other days, he struggled. Yet, what stood out was his growth and learning throughout the tour. The 23-year-old has come out of the series more experienced and mentally stronger.
Reflecting on his journey over the past few weeks, Jaiswal explained his approach.
“It’s all about how I fight. Always, the mentality is to go out there and fight it out and enjoy,” he said. “Because in the end, (and) as I tell myself that it’s the game and we need to enjoy the game. That is very important. With that, we should have fun."
He added, “I am proud of myself and all my teammates. We want fun. We want some battle in the middle. That is the fun. That’s why you play Test cricket.”
A Star in the Making
Jaiswal's performance in this series has not only contributed to India’s strength on the field but has also highlighted his potential as a long-term Test player. His attitude, hunger for runs, and commitment to learning show he’s on the path to becoming a key figure in Indian cricket’s future.
