PM Modi Says India Will Not Sacrifice Farmers’ Interests Despite US Tariff Pressure
PM Modi firmly rejected US tariff pressure, saying India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and livestock rearers.

As the United States continues to raise tariffs on Indian goods, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a strong stand. He made it clear that India will never compromise on its national interest, especially when it concerns the welfare of its farmers.

Modi Defends Farmers' Rights

In a bold statement on Thursday, PM Modi said, “India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers, livestock rearers, and fishermen brothers and sisters. I know personally that I will have to pay a heavy price for this, but I am prepared for it.”

He added, “India stands firmly with its farmers, and I am ready to face whatever it takes for their welfare.” These comments are being seen as a direct response to former US President Donald Trump's decision to impose an additional 25% tariff on Indian exports.

India Pushes Back on Oil Criticism

The US has criticised India for continuing to buy oil from Russia during the Ukraine war. In response, India has clarified that it is only trying to meet its energy needs. It has stressed that buying Russian oil is a practical decision based on national requirements.

Modi Speaks at Global Farming Conference

PM Modi made these strong remarks while speaking at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi. His speech comes at a time when India-US trade ties are under stress due to rising tariffs and diplomatic tensions.

Despite tensions, the US has extended an opportunity for dialogue. A group of American trade negotiators is expected to arrive in India on August 25. Their goal is to move forward on a long-pending trade deal between the two countries.

Talks Stuck Over Dairy and Agriculture

However, trade negotiations have dragged on due to disagreements. The main issue is India’s refusal to open up its dairy and agriculture sectors, which the US wants access to. Experts believe that tariff reductions are possible. But they also say this will depend on whether India agrees to US demands. Still, PM Modi has strongly indicated that allowing foreign entry into these sectors would hurt Indian farmers.

Protecting Livelihoods Remains Top Priority

PM Modi’s message is clear: protecting the livelihoods of farmers, fishermen, and livestock rearers is more important than trade concessions. India is willing to face global pressure, but it will not compromise its agricultural backbone.
