Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to
Donald Trump on his return to the White House for a second term. Significantly, Trump was sworn in as the 47th US President during a ceremony held at the Capitol Rotunda. Taking to X, Modi expressed his optimism, stating, “Congratulations my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump on your historic inauguration as the 47th President of the United States! I look forward to working closely together once again, to benefit both our countries and to shape a better future for the world. Best wishes for a successful term ahead."
Trump Takes the Oath
Meanwhile, Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office to Trump. As part of the tradition, outgoing President Joe Biden joined Trump for a tea ceremony at the White House. Following this, they traveled together to the Capitol for the swearing-in. Moreover, Jill Biden and Melania Trump shared a separate car ride to the venue, as did Vice President Kamala Harris and her successor, J.D. Vance.
Rare Indoor Inauguration
Interestingly, the ceremony took place indoors at the Capitol Rotunda. This marked only the second time in US history that an inauguration occurred indoors. Notably, the last instance was in 1985, during President Ronald Reagan’s second term. Political figures, along with prominent business leaders, gathered to witness the historic event.
A Historic Comeback
In addition to being a significant milestone, Trump’s return to the presidency makes him the second American president to serve two non-consecutive terms. Previously, Grover Cleveland achieved this distinction in the 19th century. Furthermore, Trump’s cabinet, including Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, is expected to assume office promptly.
Key Guests in Attendance
Earlier in the day, Trump attended a private service at St. John’s Church. He was accompanied by Melania Trump, J.D. Vance, Usha Vance, and members of his cabinet. Additionally, influential business leaders such as Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook, and Sundar Pichai attended the swearing-in ceremony.
Former Presidents Witness the Event
As part of tradition, former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama were present at the ceremony. However, Michelle Obama was notably absent. In contrast, Trump had skipped Biden’s inauguration in 2021, breaking tradition.
Altogether, Trump’s return to the presidency marks a significant moment in US history. Moving forward, his leadership promises strengthened partnerships and a renewed focus on building a brighter future for America and its global allies.
