Trump Nominates EJ Antoni to Head Bureau of Labor Statistics
Trump picks Heritage Foundation economist EJ Antoni to replace Erika McEntarfer, who was fired over claims of jobs data manipulation.

US President Donald Trump announced that he will nominate economist EJ Antoni as the next commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on Monday.

Antoni currently serves as chief economist at the conservative Heritage Foundation. He has often criticised the BLS for its handling of economic data. Therefore, he would replace Erika McEntarfer, whom Trump dismissed on August 1 after accusing her of manipulating jobs data.

McEntarfer fired after weak jobs report

Trump removed McEntarfer just hours after the BLS reported weaker-than-expected job growth in July. In addition, the agency sharply revised downward the job gains for June and May.

Trump praises Antoni’s nomination

In a Truth Social post on Monday evening, Trump wrote, “I am pleased to announce that I am nominating Highly Respected Economist, Dr EJ Antoni, as the next Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics.”

He added, “Our economy is booming, and EJ will ensure that the numbers released are HONEST and ACCURATE.”

“I know EJ Antoni will do an incredible job in this new role. Congratulations EJ!”

Senate must approve nomination

However, Antoni still needs Senate confirmation before he can officially lead the BLS. The agency operates under the US Department of Labor.

Political ties and backing

Moreover, Antoni is involved with Project 2025, a plan designed to advance Trump’s second-term agenda.

The Wall Street Journal reported that administration officials have interviewed Antoni for the post. Also, former White House adviser Steve Bannon has supported his appointment.

Following the disappointing July jobs report, Antoni called for McEntarfer’s removal on Bannon’s podcast.
