European Leaders to Join Zelenskyy in Washington Talks with Trump
European leaders will join Zelenskyy in Washington to urge Trump on the urgent need for peace as the Ukraine conflict continues.

European leaders will join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington on Monday. They will meet US President Donald Trump, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed on Sunday. This move shows strong European backing for Ukraine.

Background: Alaska Summit with Putin

Before the Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump had emphasized the importance of a ceasefire in Ukraine. However, Ukraine and its European allies were not invited to the meeting, drawing criticism from Kyiv and European capitals. The three-hour talks ended without a breakthrough, as neither side agreed on concrete steps toward a truce. Consequently, Trump ruled out an immediate ceasefire, signaling that any resolution would require further negotiations and possibly a broader framework involving multiple parties. The outcome highlighted the challenges of achieving progress without direct Ukrainian involvement.

Leaders Stress Urgency of Peace

On Monday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will join Zelenskyy in Washington. They aim to press Trump on the urgent need to halt hostilities and ensure that any peace discussions prioritize Ukraine’s security and sovereignty.

Moreover, their presence underscores Europe’s strong political and diplomatic support for Ukraine. It also seeks to reassure Kyiv and other European capitals that Zelenskyy will not be forced into a peace deal solely designed to suit US-Russia negotiations. By attending the meeting, the European leaders intend to maintain a unified front, emphasizing that any resolution must consider Ukraine’s interests and long-term stability.

Von der Leyen posted on X: “At the request of President Zelenskyy, I will join the meeting with President Trump and other European leaders in the White House tomorrow.” Her statement highlights the collaborative approach Europe is taking to support Ukraine during critical negotiations.

Zelenskyy’s Previous Oval Office Visit

Zelenskyy’s last Oval Office visit in February ended in a public confrontation. Trump and Vice President JD Vance openly criticized him for not showing enough gratitude for US aid, creating a tense atmosphere. This confrontation highlighted the fragile nature of US-Ukraine communications and raised concerns about Zelenskyy’s negotiating position.

After the Alaska summit with Putin, Trump told Fox News: “It’s really up to President Zelensky to get it done.” His statement emphasized that Ukraine must take the lead in negotiating a peace deal. It also suggested that the United States may not impose terms but expects Kyiv to actively engage in talks.

Meanwhile, the war continues unabated. Both Kyiv and Moscow launched attack drones at each other on Sunday. Violence shows that the conflict remains intense, with civilian areas and strategic locations under threat. The ongoing hostilities underline the urgency of diplomatic efforts and the high stakes involved for Ukraine and its allies.
