Rajinikanth’s Coolie continues to make headlines at the box office. On Wednesday, the film overtook the lifetime earnings of Brahmastra and Kantara, two of India’s biggest fantasy hits. Despite lower ticket sales in recent days, Coolie has maintained its strong run.

The film, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, opened with a bang. It earned more than ₹350 crore worldwide during its four-day opening weekend. However, on the first Monday, collections fell sharply by 65 percent. Since then, the numbers have been dropping steadily, which is common for mass action films led by superstars.

Current earnings and overseas success

The initial momentum helped the film secure ₹222.50 crore net (₹266 crore gross) in India so far. Internationally, Coolie has set new records for Tamil cinema. According to trade reports, it has earned about $20 million (₹166 crore) overseas.

This takes its worldwide gross to ₹432 crore after seven days. Trade analysts expect the film to cross ₹450 crore in its second weekend. However, the earlier target of ₹600 crore now appears difficult to achieve.

Beating other big hits

With ₹432 crore in global earnings, Coolie has gone past Brahmastra Part One (₹431 crore) and Kantara (₹416 crore). Earlier, it had already crossed Kamal Haasan’s Vikram (₹414 crore). Now, Rajinikanth’s film is eyeing Vijay’s The Greatest of All Time (GOAT), which has collected around ₹450 crore worldwide.

The story of Coolie

Coolie tells the story of a retired porter who becomes entangled in gangster activities while probing his friend’s mysterious death. The film stars Rajinikanth in the lead role, alongside Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, and Sathyaraj. Bollywood star Aamir Khan also appears in a cameo, marking his Tamil debut.
