After the Lok Sabha adjourned sine die on Thursday, Speaker Om Birla hosted an informal tea in his chamber. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended, along with senior ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, and NDA floor leaders.
However, opposition leaders stayed away once again, just as they did in the previous session.
Modi calls session productive
During the interaction, PM Modi described the session as productive. He noted that several important bills were cleared. In particular, he stressed the Online Gaming Bill, calling it a measure with “far-reaching consequences” and a “direct impact on the lives of citizens.”
Therefore, he argued, such issues deserve far more serious political engagement.
Modi criticises opposition
Furthermore, Modi expressed disappointment with the opposition. He said they chose repeated disruptions instead of meaningful debate. As a result, the House lost valuable time that could have been used to discuss people-centric legislation.
Focus on young MPs
Moreover, the Prime Minister drew attention to young parliamentarians. He observed that many Congress MPs are talented but are denied opportunities due to what he called the “insecurity of the family.” He hinted that Rahul Gandhi feels nervous about rising new voices.
Thus, Modi suggested that this insecurity prevents fresh leadership from growing inside the party.
Call for smooth proceedings
Over several sessions, Modi has urged parties to ensure smoother proceedings. According to him, constant disruptions silence first-time MPs eager to speak for their constituencies. Consequently, this silence weakens democratic participation.
Finally, Modi reminded leaders that the 2024 general election brought many MPs under 50, several from rural areas. Since they represent India’s future, he insisted that their active role in debates and reforms must remain a priority.
