Top US Officials Back Trump’s Choice of Sergio Gor as Envoy to India
Donald Trump nominated his close aide Sergio Gor as the next US ambassador to India, signaling a personal approach to repairing tense relations.

US President Donald Trump has nominated Sergio Gor, one of his closest aides, as the next US ambassador to India. The decision comes at a time when relations between Washington and New Delhi are under stress because of Trump’s recent tariff moves.

On Friday, Trump announced the nomination on social media. He praised Gor, 38, who currently serves as director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office.

“I am pleased to announce that I am promoting Sergio Gor to be our next United States Ambassador to the Republic of India,” Trump said. He also noted that Gor is a “great friend, who has been at my side for many years.”

Besides being ambassador, Gor will serve as a special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs.

Strong Endorsements from Top US Officials

The nomination quickly drew support from senior US officials.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on X that Gor would be an “excellent representative of America in one of the most important relationships our nation has in the world.”

Vice President JD Vance also welcomed the move, writing that Gor “will make a fantastic ambassador for our country to India.”

US Deputy Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby called the appointment a wise decision. “It will be superb to have President Trump’s wise and trusted counselor Sergio Gor as our ambassador to India. The US-India relationship is tremendously important, and it will be critical to have someone so able and insightful in this key role.”

Gor will replace Eric Garcetti, who served as ambassador from May 2023 to January 2025.

Why Trump Chose Gor

Trump’s pick comes later than his ambassador appointments to other major countries. Reports suggest Gor has limited experience with India. However, past presidents from both parties often appointed loyal allies and political supporters as ambassadors.

Bloomberg noted that Gor’s lack of direct India experience is unlikely to affect his role. Similarly, Joe Biden had chosen Eric Garcetti, his campaign co-chair, as ambassador during his presidency.

According to Politico, Gor’s appointment sends a clear message. A source familiar with the decision said, “The president is sending a powerful signal to the Modi government by sending an envoy that is very personally close to him.”

The source added, “Sergio is a clear signal that the negotiations need to be serious and that all messages come from the president.”

US-India Tensions in Focus

The appointment comes against the backdrop of rising trade and diplomatic tensions.

India continues to import oil from Russia despite US objections over the war in Ukraine. In response, Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent. He also described India as a “dead” economy with “obnoxious” trade barriers.

At the same time, India is trying to reduce its reliance on the US. It is seeking a trade deal with the European Union and deepening relations with China and Russia.

Despite these strains, experts point out that the two countries have strong reasons to rebuild ties. Their cooperation spans defense, trade, technology, and security.

Bannon and Others Praise Gor

Former White House strategist Steve Bannon said Gor’s closeness to Trump would benefit both countries.

“I believe Sergio is the only person outside of [chief of staff] Susie [Wiles] and a handful of others who actually has walk-in privileges to the president at any time, day or night,” Bannon said.

“If I’m [Prime Minister Narendra] Modi in India… I couldn’t think of a better pick. Does he have a deep knowledge base of the Indian policy issues? He doesn’t, but this guy’s a quick study. He not just has access to the president … but he has a unique trust. The president trusts this guy, that he’s dealing with him straight,” Bannon added.

Who is Sergio Gor?

Sergio Gor was born in Uzbekistan when it was still part of the Soviet Union. His family later moved to Malta, and he eventually studied in the United States.

Gor became active in Republican politics and worked closely with Senator Rand Paul. He later joined Trump’s circle as a fundraiser, book publisher, and even amateur wedding DJ.

Trump praised Gor’s work as director of presidential personnel, saying he successfully filled 95 percent of positions. Gor will continue in this role until the Senate confirms his ambassador appointment.

The Road Ahead

Bilateral trade between India and the US is valued at more than $190 billion annually. With Gor’s nomination, Trump aims to use a trusted envoy to handle one of Washington’s most critical partnerships.

The move highlights both the depth of current tensions and the potential for renewed cooperation.
