Australia’s young spinner Cooper Connolly made history on Sunday (August 24) by becoming the first Australian spinner to claim a five-wicket haul in a One-Day International. His remarkable spell came against South Africa in the third ODI at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
Record-Breaking Spell
Connolly bowled just six overs but delivered a game-changing performance. He picked up five wickets while conceding only 22 runs. His figures of 5 for 22 are now the best-ever bowling figures by an Australian spinner on home soil. Overall, they stand as the 10th-best ODI bowling performance by any Australian bowler in Australia.
Wickets That Changed the Game
The 22-year-old opened his account in the 14th over by dismissing Tony de Zorzi, who edged a delivery to wicketkeeper Alex Carey after scoring 33.
Soon after, Connolly struck again, removing Dewald Brevis. Brevis played a fiery knock of 49 off 28 balls, hitting two fours and five sixes, before Cameron Green took a sharp catch.
Connolly’s third wicket came in the 20th over when Wiaan Mulder fell for just 5, caught by Marnus Labuschagne. The very next over, Labuschagne was again involved as he caught Corbin Bosch, who scored 17 runs from 15 balls.
Finally, Connolly completed his five-wicket haul in the 24th over. Keshav Maharaj was stumped by Josh Inglis, sealing a historic moment for the young spinner.
A New Star Emerges
Connolly’s outstanding performance not only etched his name in the record books but also showcased his potential to become a key weapon in Australia’s bowling attack. With this feat, he has set the bar high for future spinners representing the national side.
