IndiGo Flight Carrying Assam CM Diverted to Agartala Amid Bad Weather in Guwahati
An IndiGo flight carrying Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma was diverted to Agartala due to heavy rain and thunderstorms in Guwahati before resuming its journey.

An IndiGo flight from Dibrugarh to Guwahati, carrying Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, had to make an emergency diversion to Agartala on Sunday because of poor weather conditions in Guwahati.

Flight resumes after delay

Airport officials confirmed that the flight later took off from Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala once the skies cleared. KC Meena, Director of Agartala Airport, told ANI, "After the weather became permissible, the common flight departed from Agartala's Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport."

Airlines issue travel alert

Earlier in the day, IndiGo released a travel advisory for passengers. The airline pointed out that continuous rain and thunderstorms were disrupting flight operations in Guwahati. "Persistent rainfall and thunderstorms are currently affecting Guwahati, impacting flights," the advisory stated.

Official statement from CMO

The Chief Minister’s Office also confirmed the diversion. It said the decision was taken because of adverse weather over Guwahati, which made landing unsafe.

Weather forecast for Guwahati

The India Meteorological Department’s Guwahati Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) had already warned of unstable weather. Its 7-day forecast for Guwahati and nearby areas predicted cloudy skies and possible heavy rainfall.

On August 24, the centre’s report from 2:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. read, "Generally cloudy sky. Rain/thunder is very likely to occur." The forecast highlighted the likelihood of downpours and thunderstorms during the evening hours.
