India Successfully Tests Indigenous Air Defence System
India has successfully tested its first Integrated Air Defence Weapon System, marking a major leap in self-reliant defence technology.

India carried out the maiden test of its Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS). The trial took place around 12:30 pm off the coast of Odisha. Officials confirmed the test was a success.

Rising Security Concerns

The development comes after Operation Sindoor, India’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack. That episode briefly escalated tensions with Pakistan. During the standoff, Pakistan launched drone strikes and missile attacks. India intercepted those strikes, which highlighted the urgent need for advanced defence systems.

DRDO Releases Test Video

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) shared footage of the test on X. It posted, “Maiden flight Tests of Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) was successfully conducted on 23 Aug 2025 at around 1230 Hrs off the coast of Odisha. IADWS is a multi-layered air defence system comprising of all indigenous Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM), Advanced Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missiles and a high power laser based Directed Energy Weapon (DEW).”

India Builds Multi-Layered Shield

The IADWS integrates three indigenous technologies:

  • Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missiles (QRSAM)

  • Advanced Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS)

  • High-power laser-based Directed Energy Weapon (DEW)

Together, these layers can destroy drones, fast jets, and enemy missiles.

How Each System Works

  • QRSAM responds within seconds to sudden aerial threats. It can hit targets at medium range and is mounted on mobile platforms.

  • VSHORADS provides short-range defence. It can shoot down drones, helicopters, and low-flying aircraft.

  • DEW uses high-powered lasers to neutralize threats at lightning speed. It offers precision and cost-effective protection.

By combining these, India has built a shield where one layer backs up the other.

Leaders Hail Achievement

Officials called the trial a landmark in India’s defence journey. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the success. He said the test had “established the multi-layered air-defence capability of our country and are going to strengthen area defence for important facilities against enemy aerial threats.”
