The Asia Cup 2025 is approaching, and fans are eagerly waiting for one of the biggest rivalries in cricket—India versus Pakistan. Despite the ongoing political tensions, the two teams will meet on the field, and if they both qualify for the final, they could face each other three times within just 14 days.
Akram urges discipline among fans and players
Legendary former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram spoke about the much-anticipated clash and stressed the importance of maintaining respect and discipline during the high-pressure games.
"I am sure these matches will be entertaining, just like all other India-Pakistan matches. But I hope both the players and the fans will remain disciplined and not cross the line," Akram said in an interview with Telecom Asia Sport.
He further added, "If Indians are patriotic and want their team to win, the same goes for Pakistani fans."
India start as favourites
India and Pakistan last played a bilateral series in 2013, but they continue to meet in global tournaments like the World Cup and the Asia Cup. Akram believes that India will enter the contest as the stronger side based on their current form.
"India have been in better form recently and will start as favourites, but the team that handles pressure best on the day will win," he explained.
Political tensions loom large
The rivalry comes at a time of heightened political strain following the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025 and subsequent cross-border tensions. Given the strained relations, the chances of resuming bilateral cricket between the two nations remain slim.
Akram wishes for a Test series
Even though bilateral series look unlikely, Akram expressed his deep wish to see the two nations renew their red-ball rivalry.
"This Asia Cup will be a feast for fans worldwide. It's my wish that India and Pakistan also resume playing a Test series. It's been too long, and it would be a historic spectacle for fans on both sides," he said.
The first clash
India and Pakistan are scheduled to meet for the first time in the Asia Cup 2025 on Sunday, August 14, in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
