India and Fiji on Monday announced a detailed plan to strengthen defence and security ties. They also took a firm stand against terrorism, rejecting any “double standards” in tackling the global threat.
The announcement came after wide-ranging talks in New Delhi between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka. This is Rabuka’s first official visit to India.
Shared Vision Despite Distance
Addressing a joint press briefing, PM Modi said, “India and Fiji may be oceans apart, but our aspirations sail in the same boat.”
Fiji plays a key role in India’s maritime security plans. India seeks to expand defence cooperation, especially as China increases its influence in the Pacific region.
Seven Agreements Signed
During the talks, the two leaders signed seven agreements. These cover areas such as medicine, skill development, trade, and capacity building.
The joint statement said, “In the talks, PM Modi and Rabuka condemned in strongest terms the Pahalgam terrorist attack and reiterated their commitment towards zero tolerance to terrorism. The two leaders rejected double standards on terrorism and agreed to boost bilateral cooperation in dealing with the menace.”
PM Modi added, “We have decided to strengthen mutual cooperation in the defence and security sector.” He also confirmed an action plan to provide training and equipment to boost Fiji’s maritime security.
Global South and Climate Cooperation
PM Modi highlighted India’s focus on the Global South. “India is co-traveller in development of Global South,” he said. He added, “We are partners in building a world order where the independence, ideas and identity of the Global South are respected.”
He also noted that climate change poses a major risk for Fiji. India will assist Fiji in disaster response and preparedness.
Strengthening the Indo-Pacific
Both leaders expressed a shared vision for a strong, inclusive, and sustainable Indo-Pacific. They also discussed building a robust economic framework.
The joint statement said, “The leaders underscored the importance of a free, open, secure, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.” They agreed to collaborate on maritime security to maintain peace and stability.
India will also create a defence attache post at its high commission in Fiji. PM Modi announced gifting 12 agricultural drones and two mobile soil testing labs to Fiji.
United Nations Reforms and Global Cooperation
Both leaders stressed the urgent need for UN reforms. They supported expanding the UN Security Council to reflect today’s geopolitical realities. Fiji reaffirmed support for India’s permanent membership in a reformed UNSC and backed its non-permanent seat bid for 2028-29.
Finally, PM Modi and PM Rabuka committed to strengthening South-South cooperation. They agreed to work together on issues affecting the Global South. Rabuka praised India’s leadership in the Voice of Global South Summits, calling them “a crucial platform to deliberate on shared concerns, challenges and developmental priorities of developing countries.”
