Devotees gathered at temples and pandals across India as the ten-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival began with prayers, rituals, and cultural celebrations.

Celebrations Begin in Mumbai

India welcomed the arrival of Lord Ganesha on Wednesday as thousands of devotees thronged the Shree Siddhivinayak Ganpati Temple in Mumbai to offer prayers. The festival, celebrated with grandeur and devotion, marks the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha, the deity of wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune.

The ten-day celebration, which started today, will conclude on Anant Chaturdashi, also known as Ganesh Visarjan, when idols are immersed in water amid chants and processions.

Significance of the Festival

Ganesh Chaturthi, also called Vinayak Chaturthi or Vinayak Chavithi, celebrates Lord Ganesha as the “God of New Beginnings” and the “Remover of Obstacles.” He is also revered as the god of wisdom and intelligence.

During the festival, families and communities install idols of Lord Ganesha in homes and pandals. People also observe fasts, prepare traditional sweets like modaks, and take part in prayers and cultural events.

Devotion Across the Country

The festival is celebrated nationwide with immense enthusiasm. Lakhs of devotees visit temples and mandals to seek blessings. Streets come alive with decorations, music, and the spirit of togetherness. The celebrations bring people of all ages and backgrounds together, strengthening bonds of faith and community.

Lalbaugcha Raja Unveiled

In Mumbai, the first look of the city’s most famous idol, Lalbaugcha Raja, was revealed on Sunday. For Mumbaikars, Lalbaugcha Raja is not just an idol but a symbol of collective faith, artistic excellence, and the city’s vibrant culture. Every year, millions of devotees line up for darshan of this iconic idol.

The Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, located at Putlabai Chawl, has carried this tradition since 1934. Over time, the idol has become one of the most revered and visited in the country.

A Tradition Rooted in History

The roots of public Ganeshotsav go back to 1893, when freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak introduced the celebration in Maharashtra to unite people during the freedom movement. The tradition continues to thrive, blending spirituality with cultural expression.

Adding to the pride of the state, the Maharashtra government declared Ganeshotsav as the “Maharashtra State Festival” earlier in July, reaffirming its importance in the state’s cultural heritage.

Faith, Culture, and Unity

Ganesh Chaturthi has grown beyond being a religious celebration. It represents India’s cultural richness, devotion, and unity. From household prayers to grand processions like Lalbaugcha Raja, the festival embodies hope, positivity, and the spirit of new beginnings.
