Authorities Hunt Clues After Minneapolis Church Shooting Claims Two Lives
A 23-year-old gunman killed two children and injured 17 others at a Minneapolis church before taking his own life.

A gunman opened fire at Annunciation Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As a result, two children died, and 17 others were injured. Later, police identified the shooter as 23-year-old Robin Westman.

Children and Elderly Among Victims

Police chief Brian O’Hara said 19 people were affected. Specifically, two children, aged eight and ten, were killed in the pews during mass. In addition, 14 other children, aged six to fifteen, were wounded. Furthermore, three elderly parishioners in their 80s were also injured. “The families of all the children that have been affected have been notified,” O’Hara said.

Shooter Dies by Suicide

O’Hara described the shooter as a “coward.” Westman took his own life after attacking children at the church. Moreover, he had no criminal record. The rifle, shotgun, and pistol he used were legally purchased. Police believe he acted alone. “There is no indication of other suspects directly involved in carrying out this attack,” O’Hara said.

Searches and Weapon Recovery

Authorities executed four search warrants — one at the church and three at Westman’s residences. “Additional firearms are being recovered from those three residential locations as we speak,” O’Hara said. Meanwhile, police continue to gather evidence with help from other agencies.

Shooter Planned a Manifesto

Investigators said Westman had timed a manifesto to release on YouTube. However, police and the FBI removed it. “This manifesto appeared to show him at the scene and included some disturbing writings,” O’Hara said.

Survivors Receiving Care

O’Hara added that the parents of all injured children are now with them. Moreover, he said the victims are expected to recover, though injuries vary in severity.

Motive Remains Unknown

Police have not yet determined a motive. However, investigators are analyzing the manifesto and materials recovered during the searches. “It’s been taken down, and our investigators are going through that to try and develop a motive,” O’Hara said. Additionally, he noted that new evidence could emerge.
