RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat underlined the need for fairness in global trade. Speaking on Wednesday at Vigyan Bhawan during the lecture series “100 Years of the Sangh Journey—New Horizons”, he said trade should not involve coercion or hidden tactics.
“International trade should happen only voluntarily, not under pressure,” Bhagwat said. He added that “self-reliance” will guide India’s economic future.
Importance of Swadeshi
Bhagwat clarified that self-reliance does not mean shutting out imports. Instead, he explained, the world functions through interdependence, and therefore import and export will continue. However, he urged that trade should avoid pressure and unfair influence.
“Aatmnirbharata (self-reliance) or Swadeshi is important. Being self-reliant does not mean stopping imports. The world functions because it is interdependent. So, export-import will continue. However, there should be no pressure in it. Swadeshi means not importing goods that we already have or can easily manufacture. We should always support local businesses. Bringing outside goods hurts local vendors,” he said.
His remarks echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push for balancing national economic interest with support for local industries.
Call for global balance
Moving beyond economics, Bhagwat reflected on the larger challenges the world faces today. He pointed out that conversations on peace, environmental protection, and economic inequality continue, yet practical solutions remain elusive.
He said, “For this, we must think and deliberate authentically, bring sacrifice into life, and develop balanced intellect and dharmic vision.” According to him, meaningful global change requires both moral values and thoughtful action.
India’s example of restraint
Bhagwat also praised India’s approach in global affairs. He noted that the country has shown restraint even in times of suffering.
“We have always exercised restraint even in our losses. Those who caused us harm were helped in their crisis. Enmity arises from individual and national ego, but beyond ego is our Bharat or Hindustan,” he said.
Model for the world
He urged Indian society to lead by example, showing that ethical conduct and balanced responses can strengthen credibility worldwide. By doing so, he said, India can serve as a guide for others in building trust and harmony.
