The Hockey Men’s Asia Cup 2025 in Rajgir, Bihar, has seen a major change. Pakistan and Oman have withdrawn from the tournament. Hockey India President Dilip Kumar Tirkey confirmed the update. He explained that Pakistan pulled out due to security concerns. Meanwhile, he noted that Oman stepped aside for personal reasons.
New Teams Step In
As a result, Bangladesh and Kazakhstan replaced them. Therefore, the event will still feature eight nations. The tournament will run from August 29 to September 7. Now, the lineup includes India, Japan, China, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Korea, Bangladesh, and Chinese Taipei.
A Missed Heavyweight
Pakistan, one of Asia’s most decorated hockey nations, will not take part. Consequently, fans will miss their traditional heavyweight presence. Moreover, Oman’s absence also reshaped the competition. In turn, Kazakhstan earned a rare chance to perform at the continental stage.
Official Statement
Speaking to ANI, Tirkey said, “The Hockey Men’s Asia Cup 2025 will be held from August 29 to September 7 at the newly built Rajgir hockey stadium in Bihar. Eight teams are set to participate in the competition. This tournament is expected to be a huge success, and the Bihar government is providing significant support. Pakistan is not participating due to security reasons, and Oman due to their personal reasons.”
Stakes Raised with World Cup Spot
Importantly, the Asia Cup will act as a qualifier for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup. Therefore, the stakes are much higher. Every match will matter, and teams will fight for every point.
India’s Pool Fixtures
Hosts India are in Pool A. Their pool also has Japan, China, and Kazakhstan. India will face China on August 29, then play Japan on August 31, and finally meet Kazakhstan on September 1.
The Big Picture
Despite the absence of Pakistan and Oman, the Asia Cup remains highly competitive. On the one hand, teams like Korea, Malaysia, and Japan will push hard to upset India’s run at home. On the other hand, Bangladesh and Kazakhstan will treat this as both a challenge and an opportunity. Thus, the Rajgir tournament still promises fierce battles and high drama.
