Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tokyo on Friday. He will attend the annual India-Japan Summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
Earlier, before leaving for his two-nation tour on Thursday night, Modi said the trip would advance India’s interests. “I am confident that my visits to Japan and China would further our national interests and priorities, and contribute to building fruitful cooperation in advancing regional and global peace, security, and sustainable development,” he said.
Japan Likely to Double Investments
On the first day of talks, Japan is expected to pledge to double its investment target in India. In addition, both countries may sign agreements to expand cooperation in defence, technology, and other key areas.
Moreover, Modi said the summit will mark the “next phase in our Special Strategic and Global Partnership.” He pointed out that this partnership has grown steadily for 11 years. “We would endeavour to give new wings to our collaboration, expand scope and ambition of our economic and investment ties, and advance cooperation in new and emerging technologies, including AI and semiconductors,” he added.
Visit to Sendai on Second Day
On the second day, Modi and Ishiba will travel to Sendai city on a high-speed train. There, they will visit a major semiconductor facility. This visit highlights the growing focus on advanced technologies.
Modi’s Message After Landing
Soon after landing in Tokyo, Modi shared a message on X. “Landed in Tokyo. As India and Japan continue to strengthen their developmental cooperation, I look forward to engaging with PM Ishiba and others during this visit, thus providing an opportunity to deepen existing partnerships and explore new avenues of collaboration,” he wrote.
Next Stop: China for SCO Summit
After completing his Japan visit, Modi will head to China. There, he will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, hosted by President Xi Jinping. He is also expected to meet Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Furthermore, Modi said India will continue to play an active role in the SCO. “From Japan, I will travel to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Tianjin, at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. India is an active and constructive member of SCO. During our Presidency, we have introduced new ideas and initiated collaboration in the fields of innovation, health and cultural exchanges. India remains committed to working with the SCO members to address shared challenges and deepen regional cooperation. I also look forward to meeting President Xi Jinping, President Putin and other leaders on the sidelines of the Summit,” he said.
