At least three people died and 94 others suffered injuries when a passenger train derailed in western Egypt on Saturday, police confirmed. This tragedy adds to the series of rail accidents that have struck the country in recent years.

How the Crash Happened

According to railway officials, the train was travelling from the coastal province of Matrouh, near the Mediterranean Sea, to Cairo. During the journey, the train left the tracks, causing seven wagons to fall off the rails. Two of them overturned, trapping passengers inside.

Rescue Efforts

The Health Ministry said 30 ambulances rushed to the scene to move the injured to nearby hospitals. Emergency teams worked through the wreckage to help passengers, while officials recorded the casualties.

Investigation Launched

Railway authorities announced an inquiry to determine the cause of the accident. Officials have yet to reveal whether technical failure, human error, or poor infrastructure played a role.

Long History of Rail Mishaps

Egypt has faced repeated railway tragedies over the years. The aging railway system, combined with poor maintenance and mismanagement, has often led to deadly crashes. In October last year, a locomotive rammed into the back of a passenger train heading to Cairo in southern Egypt. That accident killed one person and injured several others.

Government’s Response

Egypt’s government has pledged reforms to upgrade its railway network. President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi said in 2018 that the country needed 250 billion Egyptian pounds, or $8.13 billion, to rebuild its neglected railways. Despite ongoing projects, accidents continue to claim lives, raising concerns about safety.
