Thousands Join Anti-Immigration Marches Across Australia, Government Calls Them Divisive
Thousands joined anti-immigration rallies across Australia, but the government condemned the events for dividing communities and spreading hate.

Thousands of Australians marched on Sunday against immigration. The rallies took place in Sydney, Melbourne, and other major cities. They were held under the banner March for Australia.

According to the organisers, “Mass migration has torn at the bonds that held our communities together.” Moreover, they posted on X that the rallies aimed to “demand an end to mass immigration.”

Government Condemns the Rallies

However, the Labor government strongly criticised the marches. Agriculture Minister Murray Watt told Sky News, “We absolutely condemn the March For Australia Rally that’s going on today. It is not about increasing social harmony.”

He further added, “We don’t support rallies like this that are about spreading hate and that are about dividing our community.” Importantly, Watt stressed that the rallies were “organised and promoted by neo-Nazi groups.”

Large Turnout in Sydney

Meanwhile, Sydney recorded the largest turnout. The ABC reported that between 5,000 and 8,000 people attended. However, the organisers did not respond to questions about their alleged neo-Nazi connections.

Counter-Protest Responds

In response, the Refugee Action Coalition staged a counter-rally nearby. Hundreds joined to oppose the march. The group declared, “Our event shows the depth of disgust and anger about the far-right agenda of March For Australia.”

Similar Scenes in Melbourne

Likewise, Melbourne witnessed large crowds. Aerial footage revealed streets packed with demonstrators. However, veteran lawmaker Bob Katter drew backlash when he threatened a reporter who asked about his presence at one of the marches.
