The Indian football team suffered a 0-3 defeat against Asian heavyweight Iran in their second Group B match of the CAFA Nations Cup 2025 at the Hisor Central Stadium in Tajikistan on Monday. Despite the setback, India still kept their hopes alive for a third-place finish in the tournament.
Strong Start, But Pressure Builds
After opening the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Tajikistan, expectations were high for Khalid Jamil’s side. India made two changes from their first match, bringing in Danish Farooq and Nikhil Prabhu in place of Lallianzuala Chhangte and Jeakson Singh. The team showed strong defensive discipline in the first half, keeping Iran at bay and frustrating their attacking moves.
Iran Break the Deadlock
The game shifted at the 59th minute when India’s defence failed to clear a ball inside the box. Amirhossen Hosseinzadeh seized the opportunity and scored, giving Iran the lead. India pressed hard for an equaliser, but the Iranian team continued to pile on pressure.
Late Goals Seal India’s Fate
In the 89th minute, Alireza Jahanbakhsh took a shot on goal, which was initially saved by goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. However, the ball bounced off the bar to fall in front of Persepolis striker Ali Aliporghara, who scored with a precise finish. The match was sealed in extra time when Mehdi Taremi added Iran’s third goal in the sixth minute. Despite India’s solid defensive display, their lack of European-level match experience showed against the reigning champions.
Path to the Third-Place Game
India now sits second in Group B with three points from two games, while Iran has already secured a spot in the final with two wins. To maintain their position and qualify for the third-place game, India must defeat Afghanistan in their final group match. Additionally, a draw between Afghanistan and Tajikistan would further secure India’s second-place standing.
