DDMA Closes Old Railway Bridge in Delhi as Yamuna Reaches Evacuation Level
Delhi closes Old Railway Bridge as Yamuna reaches evacuation level, urging residents to move to safer areas.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) ordered the closure of the Old Railway Bridge from Tuesday evening. This comes after the Yamuna River rose to 206 metres, reaching the evacuation mark. The rise occurred because heavy water discharge from Hathnikund Barrage increased the river level.

For context, Delhi’s warning mark is 204.50 metres, while the danger mark stands at 205.33 metres. Consequently, evacuation begins once the water reaches 206 metres.

“In view of possible flooding in the Yamuna River due to increase in its level beyond the danger mark, you are hereby directed to close down the traffic and public movement on the bridge with effect from September 2 at 5 PM,” the DDMA said.

Meanwhile, authorities advised residents living in the Yamuna floodplain to move to safer areas. Around 15,000 people live in low-lying areas across six districts. Additionally, about 5,000 people live directly in the floodplain. The Old Railway Bridge serves as a key point to monitor the river’s flow and flood risk.

Traffic and Travel Disruptions

Heavy rain has caused severe traffic jams, especially at the Delhi-Gurugram border. As a result, fears of flooding along the Yamuna have increased. Moreover, flight operations in Delhi have faced disruptions, prompting airlines to issue travel advisories. Therefore, authorities remain on high alert and are taking steps to reduce flood risks and ensure public safety.

Weather Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts cloudy skies in Delhi from September 2 to 4, with light rain or thundershowers expected daily. Specifically, isolated areas may experience moderate rain on September 2. Maximum temperatures will range from 30-32°C, while minimum temperatures will be 21-23°C, 3-5°C below normal. In addition, southeast winds will blow at 15-20 kmph in the morning, below 22 kmph in the afternoon, and less than 16 kmph by evening.
