Maharaj, Markram Shine as South Africa Crush England in First ODI
South Africa crushed England in the first ODI as Aiden Markram’s explosive fifty and Keshav Maharaj’s four wickets sealed a one-sided victory.

South Africa crushed England by seven wickets in the first ODI of the three-match series at Headingley, Leeds. A devastating spell by Keshav Maharaj (4/22 in 5.3 overs) and Wiaan Mulder (3/33 in 7 overs) forced England to be bundled out for 131 in just 24.3 overs. Jamie Smith was the only England batter who looked comfortable, scoring a half-century.

South Africa needed little time to chase it down. By the time their openers had faced 100 deliveries, the game was nearly over. Aiden Markram smashed the fastest fifty by a South African opener, reaching it in 23 balls. He and Ryan Rickelton shared a 121-run opening stand and sealed the victory in only 125 balls.

The whole match wrapped up in just 272 deliveries, reflecting the difference in preparation. South Africa came off a competitive series against Australia, while England had only one optional training session after the Hundred. It also showed that South Africa are already shaping their strategy for the 2027 World Cup with fearless cricket, while England’s loose strokes looked reckless rather than brave.

Maharaj and Mulder dismantle England

South Africa’s bowlers were disciplined from the start. Keshav Maharaj, the world’s No.1 ODI bowler, claimed 4 wickets for his third career four-for. Wiaan Mulder backed him with 3 for 33, his second three-wicket haul in ODIs.

The fielding was sharp too. South Africa held all seven catching chances, a big improvement from their poor showing in Australia. Captain Temba Bavuma’s choice to bowl first proved spot on.

England’s bright start fades quickly

England opened with intent. Jamie Smith struck two stylish drives in the first over, and Ben Duckett pushed Lungi Ngidi for four. But Nandre Burger’s swing soon undid Duckett, who edged behind after playing without footwork.

Joe Root briefly raised hopes with a trademark drive for four, and Smith kept swinging freely. Boundaries flowed and England ended the Powerplay at 57 for 2, with 44 runs coming in fours. Smith and Harry Brook added 38 before a mix-up ended Brook’s innings. His call for two runs was punished by Tristan Stubbs’ sharp throw, leaving England at 82 for 3.

Smith looked solid, reaching his second consecutive ODI fifty. But his dismissal to a brilliant catch by Corbin Bosch triggered a collapse. England lost seven wickets for 29 runs in 43 balls.

Maharaj and Mulder sliced through the middle and lower order. Jos Buttler fell cheaply, while Adil Rashid and debutant Sonny Baker were cleaned up as England folded inside 25 overs.

Markram tears into debutant Baker

England handed the new ball to Sonny Baker, but the young pacer endured a nightmare debut. Markram smashed him for 14 runs in his opening over and then 20 in his second, including two sixes. Baker’s first three overs cost 44 runs.

Rickelton struggled early but survived a close call against Jofra Archer. England did not review an LBW shout, though replays showed the ball hitting leg stump. That reprieve allowed him to settle in alongside Markram.

Markram powered his way to a half-century in 23 balls, with 44 runs coming in boundaries. Baker eventually finished with figures of 7-0-76-0, the most expensive debut by an England bowler.

South Africa finish in style

Markram missed out on a century, falling for 89 with only 11 runs left to win. Bavuma and Stubbs also fell cheaply, but Dewald Brevis finished the match in style with a six.
