Djokovic Admits Struggles With Younger Stars After US Open Exit
Novak Djokovic admits younger rivals Alcaraz and Sinner now have the upper hand after a straight-set US Open semifinal defeat.

The 38-year-old Serbian star, Novak Djokovic, looked outplayed by Carlos Alcaraz in their US Open semifinal clash on Friday evening. For elite athletes, especially those regarded as the greatest of all time, accepting the rise of younger competitors is never easy. Novak Djokovic now faces that reality.

Alcaraz won in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6, 6-2, in a match that felt increasingly one-sided as it progressed. The defeat marked Djokovic’s fourth Grand Slam semifinal in 2025. Each time, he came close but fell short of reaching the final and securing his record-breaking 25th major title.

Djokovic’s Honest Admission

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Djokovic openly acknowledged that younger players like Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner now have the edge over him in the sport’s most grueling format.

“I think you’re right, I lost three out of four slams in semis against these guys, so they’re just too good, playing at a high level,” he admitted.

Earlier this year, Djokovic retired mid-match against Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open. He then lost to Sinner in the semifinals at both the French Open and Wimbledon before falling to Alcaraz in New York.

Running Out of Energy

Djokovic revealed that fatigue played a crucial role in his latest defeat.

“Unfortunately I ran out of gas after the second set. I think I had enough energy to battle him and keep with his rhythm for two sets, but after that I was out and he kept going,” he said.

This admission was striking, given Djokovic’s career-long reputation for endurance and his ability to outlast opponents in five-set battles. Now, age seems to be working against him, leaving him vulnerable to the relentless pace of younger rivals.

Struggles in Best-of-Five Matches

Djokovic explained how the best-of-five format has become increasingly difficult for him against players like Alcaraz and Sinner.

“It’s kind of what I felt this year even with Jannik. Yeah, best of five makes it very very difficult for me to play with them, particularly if it’s the end stages of the grand slam,” he said.

While Djokovic remains dominant against most of the tour, reaching the semifinals consistently, he admitted the process has been far more challenging than before.

Past Success Offers Some Hope

Earlier this season, Djokovic defeated Alcaraz at the Australian Open. However, that match was in the quarterfinals, when he was fresher following the off-season. This suggests that timing and physical readiness play a major role in his chances against the younger generation.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Djokovic’s best opportunity to win his 25th Grand Slam may come at the Australian Open early next year. Historically, Melbourne has been his most successful tournament. Entering the season well-rested could give him an advantage.

However, challenges remain. Alcaraz will be aiming for a career Grand Slam, while Sinner arrives as a two-time defending champion. These factors make Djokovic’s quest for the historic title even more difficult.
