Modi Responds to Trump’s Remarks, Calls India-US Ties ‘Forward-Looking’
Modi thanked Trump for his remarks and reaffirmed India-US ties, even as tensions rise over tariffs and Russian oil purchases.

US President Donald Trump on Friday spoke about his personal bond with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that despite ongoing friction between Washington and New Delhi, he will always remain “friends” with the Indian leader.

While addressing reporters in the Oval Office, Trump acknowledged the challenges in bilateral relations but highlighted his admiration for Modi. His comments came at a time when relations between the two nations have hit their roughest patch in decades.

Modi Appreciates Trump’s Remarks

Prime Minister Modi responded soon after through a post on X (formerly Twitter). Sharing a video clip of Trump’s remarks, Modi expressed gratitude and reiterated India’s commitment to the partnership.

“Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump’s sentiments and positive assessment of our ties,” Modi wrote. He added, “India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”

Tariff Clash and Oil Dispute Fuel Strain

Tensions between the two countries escalated when Trump imposed nearly 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods. The US administration justified the move by criticizing India’s purchase of Russian oil amid the ongoing Ukraine war.

In response, India labeled the tariffs as “unfair.” Officials in New Delhi pointed out that China imports more Russian oil than India, yet faces no similar penalties or scrutiny. This, they argued, reflects a double standard in US trade policy.

Looking Ahead

While the tariff dispute remains unresolved, Modi’s statement signals an effort to keep diplomatic channels open. Both leaders have emphasized the long-standing partnership, even as they navigate one of the most challenging phases in recent India-US relations.
