Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025: Malaysia Crushes China 4-1 to Secure Third Place
Malaysia defeated China 4-1 to secure third place in the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025, showcasing dominance and tactical brilliance.

Malaysia outplayed China 4-1 in the third-place playoff of the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025, held at the Rajgir Hockey Stadium in Bihar, India. This victory earned Malaysia a podium finish and highlighted their tactical strength and resilience throughout the tournament.

Malaysia Takes Early Control

Malaysia, known for their sharp counter-attacks and disciplined defense, set the tone from the very beginning. They applied constant pressure on China, forcing errors and maintaining dominance in possession.

In the 8th minute, Sumantri Norsyafiq opened the scoring with a precise strike, putting Malaysia ahead 1-0. After halftime, Anuar Akhimullah doubled the lead in the 36th minute and struck again in the 50th minute, extending Malaysia’s advantage to 3-0.

China tried to respond late in the game. Gao Jiesheng scored in the 54th minute to reduce the deficit to 3-1. However, their comeback hopes were short-lived. Just five minutes later, Cholan Syed scored Malaysia’s fourth goal in the 59th minute, sealing a convincing 4-1 victory.

China’s Struggles Continue

China entered the match with a strong lineup but failed to execute their strategy effectively. Their attacks were repeatedly intercepted, and they struggled to hold possession in midfield.

Although they managed a single goal through Gao Jiesheng, China could not mount a serious challenge. Defensive lapses allowed Malaysia to exploit gaps and maintain their dominance throughout the match.

Tactical Brilliance Under Arul Selvaraj

Malaysia’s success reflected the leadership of coach Arul Selvaraj, who emphasized discipline and teamwork. The midfield controlled the game’s tempo, while defenders held firm to deny China’s advances.

The forwards were relentless, creating multiple scoring chances and finishing with precision. This balance between attack and defense proved decisive in Malaysia’s commanding win.

Final Standings and Tournament Impact

With this victory, Malaysia secured third place, while China finished fourth in the tournament standings. This result highlights Malaysia’s growth as a competitive force in Asian hockey.

For China, the match exposed areas that need improvement, particularly in defense and ball retention, as they prepare for upcoming international challenges.

Looking Ahead

Both teams now turn their focus to future tournaments. Malaysia will aim to build on this strong finish and carry their momentum into the next phase of international competitions. Meanwhile, China will regroup and refine their strategies, using this experience to strengthen their squad and performance.
