Bethell, Archer Star as England Crush South Africa by Record Margin
Jacob Bethell's maiden century and Jofra Archer's fiery spell powered England to a crushing 342-run win over South Africa in the third ODI at Southampton.

England crushed South Africa by 342 runs in the third ODI of the three-match series at Southampton. Jacob Bethell scored his maiden professional century, smashing an explosive 110 off 80 balls to showcase his immense potential and power England to a commanding win. Joe Root also hit a century, while Jamie Smith and Jos Buttler played blazing cameos.

While chasing a target of 415 runs, South Africa struggled badly as Jofra Archer’s fiery spell ripped through their top order.

England Dominates from the Start

At just 21, Bethell became the second-youngest England player to score an ODI hundred. He built a massive 182-run partnership with Joe Root, setting up England’s imposing total of 415. Root, calm and composed, made batting look easy as he cruised to his 19th ODI century.

South Africa never looked likely to chase the target, especially with captain Temba Bavuma injured. Their hopes faded further after a dramatic batting collapse. Only a last-wicket stand of 15 helped them avoid their lowest-ever ODI total of 69.

Archer’s Devastating Spell

Jofra Archer delivered a blistering new-ball spell, taking 4 wickets for just 10 runs in seven overs. He struck with his second ball, dismissing Aiden Markram, and continued to trouble batters with raw pace.

He removed Ryan Rickelton, Matthew Breetzke, and Tristan Stubbs, leaving South Africa rattled. Archer’s deliveries hit speeds of 150 kph (93 mph) and caused panic, with Stubbs and Corbin Bosch both struck on the body.

Brydon Carse added pressure by dismissing Wiaan Mulder and Dewald Brevis. Later, Adil Rashid wrapped up the innings, taking three wickets. South Africa dropped two catches, which could have made their situation even worse.

Bethell’s Breakthrough Performance

Bethell faced criticism after twin failures in England's Test loss to India, but he answered strongly. His aggressive batting against Keshav Maharaj set the tone.

He smashed three straight sixes, punished loose deliveries, and reached his hundred with a powerful cover drive. Celebrating with arms wide open, Bethell marked his first century in 141 professional innings across formats.

With this innings, Bethell has now scored 50-plus runs in four of his six ODIs this year. His form strengthens his claim as a permanent member of England’s white-ball squad and a future Test contender.

Root’s Classy Support

While Bethell dominated, Root played a textbook knock. He scored 50 singles, 10 twos, and two threes, showing his skill at rotating strike. Root's 100 came off 95 balls, with only six boundaries. This was his 19th ODI century, the most by any England batter, extending his dominance in the format.

England’s scoring did not slow even after Bethell’s dismissal. Harry Brook was run out cheaply, but Jos Buttler and Will Jacks ensured a strong finish. Buttler smashed an unbeaten 62 off 32 balls, hitting innovative strokes, including scoops and ramps. Jacks joined in with big hits, taking England past the 400-run mark for the seventh time in ODIs.

South Africa’s Struggles

South Africa’s bowling lacked control. They gave away 27 extras, including 19 wides. Nandre Burger recorded 0 for 95 off 10 overs, the most expensive bowling figures in their ODI history. Debutant Codi Yusuf also struggled, conceding 80 runs from 10 overs, the worst debut figures for a South African bowler.

Missed Opportunity for South Africa

South Africa had already clinched the series at Lord’s, raising hopes of a historic 3-0 sweep. Instead, they faltered badly in the final game. Dropped catches, poor fielding, and lack of intensity cost them dearly. A simple catch dropped by Breetzke and Burger’s miss of Bethell at 44 proved turning points.

Brief Scorecard

England (Eng): 414/5 (50)
Jacob Bethell 110(82), Joe Root 100(96), Jos Buttler 62*(32);
Keshav Maharaj 2/61(8), Corbin Bosch 2/79(10)
South Africa (SA): 72 (20.5)
Corbin Bosch 20(32), Keshav Maharaj 17(17), Tristan Stubbs 10(22);
Jofra Archer 4/18(9), Adil Rashid 3/13(3.5)
Player of the Match: Jofra Archer
Player of the Series: Keshav Maharaj

England avoided a home whitewash for the first time since 2006 with this thumping win. Bethell’s breakthrough innings and Archer’s return to top form are huge positives as England prepares for their New Zealand tour in October and the upcoming Ashes series. South Africa, meanwhile, will need to regroup after their collapse and fix issues ahead of their future series.
