The US Supreme Court has cleared the way for the Trump administration to continue immigration raids in Los Angeles. The court overturned a federal judge’s order that previously blocked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from stopping people without “reasonable suspicion.”
The decision, delivered on Monday, came as a 6-3 ruling in favor of the Trump administration. This marks a major legal victory for former President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly vowed to deport illegal immigrants, whom he calls “aliens.”
As a result, ICE agents now have the authority to carry out raids based on factors such as race, language, or type of employment.
Kavanaugh Defends the Ruling
Justice Brett Kavanaugh, writing for the majority, argued that the lower court had gone too far by placing heavy restrictions on ICE.
“To be clear, apparent ethnicity alone cannot furnish reasonable suspicion,” Kavanaugh explained. “However, it can be a ‘relevant factor’ when considered along with other salient factors.” His statement clarified that while race cannot be the only reason for a stop, it can play a supporting role in ICE’s decision-making process.
Democrats Slam Decision
The ruling drew swift criticism from Democrats and immigration rights advocates. California Governor Gavin Newsom strongly condemned the Supreme Court, accusing it of enabling racial discrimination.
“Trump’s hand-picked Supreme Court majority just became the Grand Marshal for a parade of racial terror in Los Angeles,” Newsom said.
He added, “This isn’t about enforcing immigration laws it’s about targeting Latinos and anyone who doesn’t look or sound like Stephen Miller’s idea of an American.” Miller was a key architect of Trump’s hardline immigration policies.
Newsom also warned, “Trump’s private police force now has a green light to come after your family and every person is now a target.” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass echoed these concerns. She called the decision an “attack on civil liberties.”
“The rule of law used to mean something not just to us, but to the Supreme Court,” she said. “But now, with the stroke of a pen, the Supreme Court has undermined the rights of millions.”
Raids Expand to Chicago
While Los Angeles braces for increased enforcement, immigration raids have already begun in Chicago under “Operation Midway Blitz.” The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the operation shortly after Trump threatened to send National Guard troops into Illinois. The move escalates his public feud with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, whom he has criticized on social media.
“For years, Governor Pritzker and his fellow sanctuary politicians released Tren de Aragua gang members, rapists, kidnappers, and drug traffickers on Chicago’s streets,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. She claimed these actions “put American lives at risk and made Chicago a magnet for criminals.”
Rising Tensions Nationwide
With the Supreme Court ruling now in effect, immigration enforcement is set to intensify across several states.
The decision has deepened political divisions, with Trump and his supporters celebrating the move as a victory for border security, while opponents see it as a dangerous step toward racial profiling and civil rights violations.
As raids expand, communities in Los Angeles and Chicago are preparing for legal battles and protests, setting the stage for a new round of clashes over immigration policy in the United States.
