Asia Cup 2025: Bangladesh Eye Strong Start Against Hong Kong in Crucial Match
Bangladesh face Hong Kong in a crucial Asia Cup Group B clash as both teams fight to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Bangladesh will take on Hong Kong in a key Group B Asia Cup match on Thursday, September 11, at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. This game is crucial for both teams as they fight to stay alive in the tournament.

The Tigers, led by Litton Das, enter the competition full of confidence after winning three consecutive T20I series. They recently defeated Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands. These victories were historic, as Bangladesh earned their first-ever T20I series wins against both Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Against the Netherlands, they claimed a dominant 2-0 series sweep.

Bangladesh Look to Rewrite History

Bangladesh have reached the Asia Cup final three times—in 2012, 2016, and 2018—but fell short on each occasion. However, Litton Das believes the team must focus on the present rather than past disappointments.

“The past is history now; history is meant to be broken. We will try to play well. That will be a challenge; it won’t be easy. We will try to improve as a team,” Litton said at the captains’ press conference in Dubai.

He added, “We have played three series recently and played well. Every player is excited. Every team is good in the Asia Cup; we have to give our best. The main challenge is that we have got to give our hundred per cent to win matches.”

Litton holds a unique record as the only Bangladesh captain to win four T20I series. A win in this game would boost their chances of progressing to the next round.

Group Standings and Pressure Situation

Bangladesh face added pressure even before their campaign begins. Afghanistan currently lead the group with a net run rate of +4.700 after thrashing Hong Kong by 94 runs in their opening match. With Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka seen as the top contenders, there is little room for mistakes.

A loss here would severely hurt Bangladesh’s qualification hopes, making this match a must-win.

Hong Kong’s Struggle and Motivation

Hong Kong are in a difficult position after their heavy defeat to Afghanistan, which left them at the bottom of the group. Another loss would almost certainly knock them out of contention, forcing them to rely on improbable results to advance.

Interestingly, Hong Kong have a winning record against Bangladesh in T20 cricket. Their only meeting came during the 2014 Men’s T20 World Cup, where they stunned the Tigers by two wickets in Chattogram. This history could provide some motivation for the side to stage a comeback.

Hong Kong Captain Reflects on Tough Loss

After the heavy defeat to Afghanistan, Hong Kong captain Yasim Murtuza praised his team’s effort, especially Babar Hayat and the spinners. Babar scored a gritty 39 off 43 balls before falling to Gulbadin Naib. However, Murtuza admitted that Azmatullah Omarzai’s 53-run knock was the turning point of the match.

“It just feels like a dream come true (on playing the Asia Cup). It is one of the biggest tournaments in Asia. To be honest, we weren't expecting that kind of total. I was expecting 150. Credit to Omarzai, he changed the game. Babar Hayat with the bat and the spinners were positives from the game,” Murtuza said.

The Road Ahead

For Bangladesh, this match is an opportunity to continue their winning run and stay on course for the knockout stage. For Hong Kong, it is a fight for survival. Both teams will be under immense pressure, setting the stage for a thrilling contest in Abu Dhabi.

Pitch Report

The Sheikh Zayed Stadium has hosted 69 T20Is with an average first-innings score of 145, suggesting it is not typically a high-scoring venue. However, Afghanistan managed to score 188 here on Tuesday, proving that a big total is possible with aggressive batting. Both pacers and spinners are expected to get help from the pitch.
