US President Donald Trump immediately raised alarm after Russian drones breached Poland’s airspace. “What’s with Russia violating Poland’s airspace with drones? Here we go!” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.
Meanwhile, the White House confirmed that Trump was closely monitoring the situation. He also planned to speak with Polish President Karol Nawrocki.
Poland Confirms Drone Intrusion
Later, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that Russian drones had crossed into Poland 19 times during overnight strikes on Ukraine.
As a result, Polish and allied fighter jets scrambled into action. They shot down three drones, preventing further damage. “This is edging closer to open conflict,” Tusk warned, while emphasizing that no casualties were reported.
Additionally, local media shared videos showing firefighters and soldiers inspecting a destroyed house in the village of Wyryki-Wola. The roof had been blown off, and debris littered the ground.
Poland Invokes NATO Article 4
In response, Tusk invoked NATO’s Article 4, which allows urgent talks when a member nation feels its “territorial integrity or security” is threatened.
“This situation brings us closer than ever to open conflict since World War II,” Tusk told parliament. However, he reassured lawmakers, saying, “There is no reason today to claim that we are in a state of war.” Notably, this was only the eighth time NATO had used Article 4 in its history.
Polish Leaders Condemn Russia
Meanwhile, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski accused Russia of deliberate aggression.
“This is an unprecedented case of an attack not only on Poland’s territory but also on NATO and the European Union,” he declared.
However, Russia denied targeting Poland. Its foreign ministry accused Warsaw of spreading “myths” to escalate tensions.
The Russian embassy in Warsaw told AFP that Poland had “failed to provide evidence of the Russian origin of the objects.”
Russian Strikes Intensify Across Ukraine
At the same time, Russia launched heavy strikes across Ukraine, including in the western city of Lviv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the drone breach, calling it a “dangerous precedent” for Europe. He urged Western allies to deliver a strong and united response.
Furthermore, Poland’s interior ministry reported that seven drones and debris from a projectile had been recovered. It confirmed that a house and a car were damaged during the overnight attack.
Eyewitness Alicja Wesolowska described the terrifying moment her home was destroyed. “We were just sitting there, and this plane flew over,” she recalled. “I told my husband: ‘Why is this plane so loud today?’ And suddenly, a bang, and that was it.”
NATO Holds Emergency Talks
Consequently, the North Atlantic Council, NATO’s top decision-making body, convened an emergency meeting under Article 4. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte praised the swift response. “Our air defences did their job,” he stated.
He also condemned Russia’s “reckless behaviour” and urged President Vladimir Putin to halt strikes on civilians.
Rising Tensions in Europe
Importantly, this marked the first time NATO and Poland had shot down Russian drones. Previously, Russian drones had entered NATO airspace, but no direct military action was taken.
As a result, the incident represents a dangerous escalation of the conflict. European leaders now face the difficult task of protecting NATO borders while preventing the war from spreading further.
