Rubio Hails India as Key US Partner, Backs Sergio Gor as Ambassador
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised India as a key US partner and backed Sergio Gor’s nomination as ambassador, calling their ties in a phase of “extraordinary transition.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described India as one of Washington’s most important global partners on Thursday. Moreover, he said relations between the two nations are going through “extraordinary transition.”

Rubio made these remarks while speaking at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during Sergio Gor’s confirmation hearing. Gor is President Donald Trump’s nominee for US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs.

According to Rubio, “India is at the core of America’s Indo-Pacific strategy.” He further emphasized that the 21st century will be shaped by events in the Indo-Pacific region, with India playing a leading role.

Trump Nominates Sergio Gor for Key Role

Last month, President Donald Trump nominated Sergio Gor, 38, who currently serves as Director of Presidential Personnel. If confirmed, Gor will become the youngest US ambassador to India.

Furthermore, Rubio strongly supported Gor’s nomination. “It is important that the United States be represented at that post with someone who has the direct ear and confidence of the President of the United States,” he said.

He also added, “I don’t know of anyone who has had a better or closer working relationship with the President than Gor.”

Indo-Pacific at the Heart of US Strategy

Rubio pointed out that the Indo-Pacific will define the future of global politics.

“In the 21st century, the story is going to be written in the Indo-Pacific,” he said. “We are in a period of extraordinary transition in that relationship with India.”

Additionally, he noted that upcoming challenges, from regional tensions to global crises like the war in Ukraine, will require close coordination between Washington and New Delhi.

Gor’s Direct Link to Trump Considered Vital

Rubio stressed that Gor’s direct access to President Trump makes him the right person for the job. “Gor is very, very close to the President and has the President’s confidence,” Rubio explained.

As a result, foreign governments will see Gor as someone who can quickly deliver messages and decisions from the White House. “When you interact with these countries, having a representative in a place like India that has direct access to the President, and who they know can get things done, is critically important,” Rubio said.

Finally, he concluded, “I don’t know of anyone out there that’s better positioned to do that than Gor.”

Strengthening US-India Ties

Overall, if confirmed, Gor will play a crucial role in strengthening US-India relations. His appointment also signals Washington’s determination to deepen ties with New Delhi during a period of major geopolitical change.
