Sergio Gor Highlights Modi-Trump Bond, Says Tariff Deal Near
Sergio Gor, nominee for US Ambassador to India, praised the Modi-Trump bond and said both nations are close to resolving their tariff dispute while tackling key regional challenges.

Sergio Gor, a close aide to President Donald Trump, highlighted the “unique friendship” between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Gor explained that India and the US are “not that far apart” on reaching a trade agreement to resolve tariff issues.

“India is a strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond,” Gor said. “Under President Donald Trump’s strong leadership, I’m committed to advancing America’s interest in this important partnership.”

India’s Vital Role in Regional Stability

Gor emphasized that India plays a central role in global affairs. “India’s geographic position, economic growth, and military capabilities make it a cornerstone for regional stability and a critical part of promoting prosperity and advancing the security interests that our nations share,” he stated.

Last month, Trump nominated Gor, who currently serves as Director of Presidential Personnel, for this important diplomatic position. Moreover, Gor will also take on the role of Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs.

Trump’s Praise for Modi

Gor pointed out that President Trump often criticizes other nations on trade matters. However, he said Trump has consistently praised Prime Minister Modi even when criticizing India’s policies.

“In fact, if you have noticed, when he has gone after other nations, he tends to go after their leaders for putting us in that position and for the United States imposing those tariffs,” Gor explained.

“While the President has been critical of India, he has gone out of his way to compliment PM Modi. They have an incredible relationship,” he added.

Tariff Talks Near Resolution

Furthermore, Gor revealed that the two nations are close to finalizing an agreement on tariffs. He said the dispute over the 50 percent tariffs on Indian products could be resolved within a few weeks.

At the same time, Trump is urging European Union leaders to increase tariffs on India and China. This move aims to punish both countries for continuing to buy Russian energy supplies.

Reducing India’s Dependence on Russian Oil

In addition, Gor identified cutting India’s reliance on Russian oil as one of the administration’s top priorities. “To your point, getting India to stop buying Russian oil is a top priority for this administration,” he said.

He admitted there are ongoing challenges. Nevertheless, he promised that Washington will work closely with New Delhi to reach a solution.

Trump’s Global Peace Efforts

Gor also spoke about President Trump’s broader foreign policy goals. “Bringing peace around the world is a top priority to this administration,” he stated.

He further cited Trump’s efforts to mediate conflicts in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Ukraine.

Strengthening a Key Partnership

In conclusion, Gor’s remarks underscored Washington’s determination to strengthen its partnership with India.

If confirmed, he will play a crucial role in guiding one of America’s most important relationships in the Indo-Pacific region, especially during a time of growing geopolitical challenges.
