Discord Vote Brings Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to Nepal’s Leadership
Nepal’s youth used Discord to elect Sushila Karki as interim leader, turning a gaming and crypto platform into a stage for political change.

Discord, traditionally known as a hub for gaming communities and crypto traders, has emerged as an unexpected tool for political activism in Nepal. Following widespread protests and the ban of major social media platforms, young activists turned to Discord to organize, discuss, and even vote on the nation’s next leader.

Youth Take Politics Online

The movement centered around the “Youth Against Corruption” server, which quickly grew to over 130,000 members. Over the past week, the group conducted multiple polls to gauge public opinion.

On September 10, the community reached a decision. Sushila Karki, Nepal’s former chief justice, was chosen as interim leader. More than 7,700 votes were cast, and Karki crossed the 50% threshold needed for selection, according to the South China Morning Post.

The very next day, Karki met with Nepal’s president, Ram Chandra Poudel, and Army chief Gen. Ashok Raj Sigdel, demonstrating how an online decision translated into real-world political impact.

Discord’s Crypto Roots Influence the Movement

Discord is a familiar platform for crypto traders, investors, and NFT communities. It is often used for sharing trading signals, coordinating NFT launches, and conducting DAO governance votes.

Observers noted parallels between the Nepali protest movement and crypto’s decentralized ethos. One X (formerly Twitter) user commented, “What is happening? Yesterday the AI minister, now a Discord revolution.” Another added, “This Discord vote? Crazy Gen Z govt in Nepal. TikTok will become the national broadcast of Nepal.”

Inside the server, many participants compared the process to crypto governance. One member said, “I think I just witnessed the first internet-native revolution.” Others described the experience as being inside a massive DAO, where tens of thousands of members vote to determine leadership.

Crypto Community Weighs In

The crypto community quickly noticed the experiment. Traders and community leaders, who regularly use Discord for token launches and governance votes, found the Nepali model familiar.

One crypto-focused account remarked, “For the first time anywhere in the world, Nepal elects its interim Prime Minister via Discord vote … after Gen Z overthrew the Marxist-Leninist regime.” Another added, “Btw why Discord lmao … the server where they voted,” highlighting both disbelief and recognition.

Discord, while obscure to outsiders, acts as a virtual town square for crypto users, making it the perfect platform for a fast-moving, youth-led political revolution.
