Karki Sworn In After Political Crisis
Sushila Karki, Nepal’s first female chief justice and a prominent anti-corruption activist, took the oath of office on Friday. She assumed leadership four days after former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned.
Her appointment came amid massive protests across the country. Protesters, especially student groups, had been demanding action against corruption and curbs on freedom of expression. These groups strongly backed Karki’s rise to the top post.
India’s Commitment to Nepal
Earlier in the day, Modi extended his greetings to Karki through a social media post. He wrote, “I extend my best wishes to Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Nepal.”
Strong Support for Nepal’s Transition
Modi’s comments highlighted India’s continued support for Nepal during this critical transition. Furthermore, they showed confidence in Karki’s leadership to guide the country through reforms and restore political stability.
