Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Hits Assam, Tremors Felt in Guwahati and Bhutan
A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Assam near Dhekiajuli on Sunday, sending tremors across northeastern India and Bhutan, but causing no reported casualties.

Assam experienced a 5.9-magnitude earthquake, with its epicentre near Dhekiajuli, the US Geological Survey reported on Sunday evening. Tremors were felt in Guwahati, parts of north Bengal, and neighbouring Bhutan.

Shallow Depth and Impact

The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 km, according to the GFZ. Officials confirmed that there were no casualties or significant property damage so far.

Panic in Guwahati

Residents in Guwahati rushed out of their homes as tremors shook the city. Former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal wrote on X, “Major earthquake in Assam. My prayers for everyone’s safety and well-being.”

Epicentre and Tremor Spread

Authorities reported the earthquake struck at 4:41 pm, with its epicentre in Udalguri district at a depth of 5 km. Tremors spread across several northeastern states and reached Bhutan.

Government Response

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa said, “We are actively monitoring the situation.” He also confirmed that no major damage or casualties have been reported so far.
