Jimmy Kimmel Show Suspended After Remarks on Charlie Kirk Murder
Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show has been taken off air indefinitely. After backlash over his comments on the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Disney and Nexstar decided to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! immediately.
A Disney spokesperson confirmed to the BBC, “Jimmy Kimmel Live will be pre-empted indefinitely.” This decision came after strong public criticism of Kimmel’s Monday night monologue.
Kimmel’s controversial remarks
During his show, Kimmel accused Trump supporters of politicizing Kirk’s murder. He said, “The Maga gang desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
Furthermore, Kimmel mocked Trump’s reaction to Kirk’s killing. He also criticised the decision to fly flags at half-staff in Kirk’s honor.
He played a clip of Trump speaking about Kirk’s death and then cut to a statement about building a ballroom at the White House. “He’s at the fourth stage of grief — construction. It’s demolition, construction,” Kimmel joked.
He added, “This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he calls a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish.”
Networks react swiftly
As a result of the outrage, Nexstar, one of the largest US TV station owners, announced it would stop airing the show “for the foreseeable future.”
Andrew Alford, President of Nexstar’s broadcasting division, called Kimmel’s remarks “offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse.”
He explained, “Continuing to give Kimmel a broadcast platform in the communities we serve is simply not in the public interest at the current time.”
Moreover, he said the suspension was meant to “let cooler heads prevail as we move toward the resumption of respectful, constructive dialogue.”
The case against Kirk’s killer
The controversy intensified because it unfolded just one day before Tyler Robinson, 22, appeared in court. Authorities charged him with aggravated murder in the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk, 31, last Wednesday.
Rising political tensions
Meanwhile, tensions between Trump supporters and critics continue to grow. Kimmel has frequently criticised Trump and his allies in the past. However, this latest monologue has deepened political divides and sparked national debate about free speech and media responsibility.
So far, Kimmel and his representatives have not released a statement regarding the show’s suspension.
