The rivalry between India and Pakistan will intensify on Sunday as they face off in the Super Fours stage of the Asia Cup. This match carries extra weight, as the winner will take a significant step toward securing a place in the final, while the loser’s chances will diminish.
India enter the contest as clear favourites. They are not only the defending Asia Cup champions but also the top-ranked T20 side in the world. Adding to their confidence, India had crushed Pakistan by seven wickets in their Group A encounter on September 14.
For Pakistan, this match is about more than just two points. They will aim to bounce back from the heavy defeat and move past the controversy that followed, when India’s players refused to take part in the customary post-match handshake.
Recap of the Group Stage Clash
India dominated the earlier meeting right from the start. Pakistan opener Saim Ayub was dismissed on the first ball, caught at point off Hardik Pandya’s bowling. In the very next over, wicketkeeper Mohammad Haris fell to a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah, leaving Pakistan in early trouble.
Their innings struggled for momentum, and it was only thanks to late hitting from Shaheen Shah Afridi and leg-spinner Sufiyan Muqeem — who combined for four boundaries and two sixes — that Pakistan managed to cross 100 in the 19th over. They eventually finished at 128.
India chased down the target with ease. Opener Abhishek Sharma smashed 31 runs off just 13 balls, setting the tone. Captain Suryakumar Yadav added 47 runs from 37 balls, sealing India’s second win of the tournament.
India collected two points but sparked controversy by walking off the field without shaking hands with their opponents.
The Post-Match Controversy
After the match, Yadav and Shivam Dube walked off without meeting Pakistan captain Salman Agha and his team for the traditional handshake.
Pakistan’s players waited near the boundary rope, expecting the usual gesture of sportsmanship. However, the Indian players instead shook hands only with each other before heading straight to their dressing room, leaving Pakistan’s players visibly upset.
When questioned about the incident, Yadav explained his team’s decision. “A few things in life are above sportsman’s spirit,” Yadav said.
“We stand with all the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and with their families, and dedicate this win to our brave armed forces who took part in Operation Sindoor.”
Yadav was referring to recent Indian missile strikes on six locations inside Pakistan.
Pakistan’s Response to India’s Actions
Pakistan manager Naveed Akram Cheema formally lodged a complaint with ICC match referee Andy Pycroft. In protest, captain Salman Agha refused to participate in the post-match interview with the tournament broadcaster.
Three days later, Pakistan officials even considered withdrawing from the tournament. Their deliberations caused a delayed start to their next match against the UAE.
Why the Asia Cup is Being Played in the UAE
Although India holds the official hosting rights, the tournament is being staged in the UAE due to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. This neutral venue was chosen to ensure smooth operations and security.
Head-to-Head Record
India have historically had the upper hand over Pakistan in Asia Cup encounters:
-
India: 7 titles, 11 appearances in the final.
-
Pakistan: 2 titles, 5 final appearances.
Out of their 20 meetings, India have won 11 times, while Pakistan have won six. Three matches, including one in the 2023 group stage, were abandoned due to rain.
Team News
India are expected to return to the same playing XI that defeated Pakistan earlier in the tournament after resting a few key bowlers against Oman.
Despite their heavy defeat, Pakistan are unlikely to make changes and will stick with the same lineup, hoping for a better outcome this time.
Weather Forecast
Sunday’s weather in Dubai will be hot and humid, with afternoon highs reaching 41°C (106°F) and partial cloud cover. The match will begin shortly after sunset, bringing slightly cooler conditions around 31°C (88°F) as the evening progresses.
Pitch Report
The pitch used in India’s opening game against the UAE was spin-friendly. India opted for a spin-heavy attack, including Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Varun Chakravarthy, with Jasprit Bumrah as the sole specialist pacer. Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube provided additional pace options.
This strategy worked perfectly, as India bowled the UAE out for just 57 and chased the target in 4.3 overs.
For Sunday’s clash, one of the central pitches has been prepared, and conditions are again expected to favour spin. Dew might form later in the evening, influencing tactics.
The captain winning the toss will likely choose to bat first to avoid bowling in damp conditions later. India’s spin trio of Axar, Kuldeep, and Varun will play a key role.
With the pitch favouring spin and tensions running high, Sunday’s encounter promises to be fiercely competitive. India will look to maintain their dominance, while Pakistan aim for redemption both on and off the field.
