Jasprit Bumrah Fires Back at Mohammad Kaif Over Bowling Strategy Criticism
Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Mohammad Kaif’s claims about avoiding death overs, asserting his fitness and bowling strategy remain effective for India.

India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah stirred social media after responding strongly to former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif’s remarks about his fitness and bowling strategy.

Kaif had analysed India’s use of Bumrah in the Asia Cup and suggested that the pacer was avoiding death overs deliberately to protect himself from injuries. However, Bumrah refuted the claim on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Kaif’s analysis was inaccurate and, in fact, not the first time Kaif had been wrong about him. He wrote sharply, “Inaccurate before, inaccurate again.”

Kaif’s Observations on Bumrah’s Bowling

Kaif pointed out a change in Bumrah’s deployment. Unlike earlier under Rohit Sharma, where Bumrah’s overs were split across the powerplay, middle, and death overs (for example, overs 1, 13, 17, and 19), Bumrah bowled three consecutive overs with the new ball under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy and Gautam Gambhir’s strategy in the Asia Cup.

Kaif suggested this could indicate that India was overprotecting Bumrah. He argued that Bumrah preferred bowling once he was “warmed up”, and skipping high-pressure death overs might weaken India’s finishing ability, especially against stronger teams in the World Cup. He added, “1 over of Bumrah in the remaining 14 overs is a huge relief for batters. Against stronger teams at World Cup, this could hurt India.”

Bumrah’s Response and Performance

Bumrah’s reply was short and dismissive, making it clear that Kaif’s assumptions did not match reality.

On the field, Bumrah performed effectively with the new ball in India’s Super 4 clash against Bangladesh, troubling their top order. Meanwhile, Team India has used Shivam Dube and Kuldeep Yadav to close innings in Bumrah’s absence during the death overs—a strategy that has worked moderately well so far.

Managing Bumrah’s Fitness

BCCI has been careful with Bumrah since his back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He missed significant cricket, including two Tests against England, and returned to T20I cricket after nearly a year on the sidelines. His participation in the Asia Cup had also raised concerns about managing his workload to avoid injuries.

Despite these precautions, Bumrah’s strong performance and his firm response to Kaif have reassured fans that he remains a vital force in India’s bowling attack.
