An active shooter opened fire from a boat outside the American Fish Company in Southport, North Carolina, on Saturday night. The attack happened around 9:30 p.m. local time, causing chaos at the popular pub and restaurant. The location is about 20 miles south of Wilmington.
According to police, at least seven people were shot. Three victims died at the scene, while others were rushed to nearby hospitals. Authorities have not yet shared updates on the conditions of those injured.
Shooter Escapes by Boat
Southport City Manager Noah Saldo confirmed that the shooter arrived by boat and began firing into the crowd. Then, the suspect sped away before law enforcement could respond.
"Several people were taken to the hospital," Saldo said. He added that the numbers could change as rescue efforts continue.
Authorities Urge Residents to Stay Indoors
City officials issued a warning urging people to avoid the area and remain inside their homes. They also asked residents to report any suspicious activity to 911.
"Avoid the area and remain in your homes. Please report any suspicious activity immediately to 911," the public statement read.
Investigation Underway
The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office announced it is assisting the Southport Police Department and other law enforcement agencies in the investigation.
"The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office is assisting the City of Southport Police Department, along with multiple law enforcement agencies throughout the county. Please keep all those affected, as well as our first responders, in your thoughts and prayers," the sheriff's office stated.
Search for Shooter Continues
Emergency scanner chatter hinted at more casualties, but officials have not confirmed these reports. Authorities continue to search for the suspect and are investigating the motive behind the attack.
The situation remains tense as investigators work to piece together details of the deadly shooting.
