US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday he would send troops to Portland, Oregon. He called the city “war ravaged” and claimed ICE facilities there were “under siege” by Antifa and other domestic terrorists.”
He wrote on Truth Social, “At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists. I am also authorizing Full Force, if necessary. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Therefore, Trump said the deployment was necessary to protect ICE facilities and federal personnel from domestic threats.
ICE Facilities and Protests
The ICE facility in Portland has frequently faced protests, which sometimes turn violent. As a result, several federal agents have been injured during clashes.
Furthermore, earlier this week, Trump formally designated Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization, signaling a tougher stance against the group.
Criticism from Democrats
Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers from Oregon criticized Trump’s announcement and ICE actions. Representative Suzanne Bonamici said, “ICE has said they’re targeting people for arrest and detainment who have committed crimes. That’s what they told us. But that’s not what we are seeing.”
Past Federal Deployments
Previously, Trump sent National Guard troops to Los Angeles and Washington, DC. However, these moves drew sharp criticism and legal challenges from local Democrats. The only exception was Memphis, where the governor welcomed federal forces.
Portland and Other Cities
Earlier in September, Trump described Portland as “living in hell” and suggested sending federal forces. Moreover, he has issued similar warnings to other Democrat-led cities, including Chicago and Baltimore, citing threats to law enforcement and federal facilities.
Thus, the troop deployment signals Trump’s intent to protect ICE facilities and assert federal authority amid protests and criticism.
