One Dead, 65 Trapped in Indonesia Islamic School Collapse
At least 65 students are trapped after an Islamic school collapsed in Indonesia, as rescuers race to save lives amid rising casualties.

At least 65 students are trapped under debris after an Islamic school building collapsed in Sidoarjo, Indonesia. So far, rescuers have recovered one body. However, officials fear the death toll will rise. The tragedy occurred during afternoon prayers, when many students were inside the hall.

According to a local police spokesperson, the building was undergoing an unauthorized expansion at the time of the incident, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

Many Injured, Mostly Boys

Meanwhile, 99 injured students have been taken to nearby hospitals. Most of the victims were boys. In contrast, female students escaped because they were praying in a separate section, survivors said.

Immediately after the collapse, teachers, staff, and local residents rushed to help. They carried students with head injuries and broken bones to safety.

As a result, authorities have launched a full investigation. Police later revealed that the prayer hall was originally a two-story structure. But, two additional floors had been added illegally without permits.

Rescue Efforts Underway

Currently, rescue operations are facing challenges due to unstable debris and heavy concrete slabs. Nanang Sigit, the rescue mission leader, told AP, “Oxygen and water are being delivered to those still trapped beneath the rubble in hopes of keeping them alive.”

Moreover, he explained that rescuers have seen several bodies. Yet, they are focusing on saving those who still show signs of life.

At the same time, hundreds of rescuers are working tirelessly. They are using special equipment like breathing gear and medical evacuation tools to reach the trapped students.

Families Wait in Fear

Meanwhile, families of missing students have gathered at hospitals and near the collapsed site. They wait anxiously for updates as the rescue mission continues.

Ultimately, the community remains tense, clinging to hope that more students will be saved.
