India Women defeated Sri Lanka by 58 runs (DLS Method) in the opening match of the ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025 in Guwahati. India posted 269/8 in 47 overs in the rain-affected match. Deepti Sharma (53) and Amanjot Kaur (57) played brilliant knocks that lifted India to a strong total despite a middle-order collapse. Inoka Ranaweera (4/46 in 9 overs) bowled impressively for Sri Lanka.
In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 211. The Indian bowlers maintained tight lines and took wickets at regular intervals. Deepti Sharma (3/54 in 10 overs) also starred with the ball. Chamari Athapaththu (43) tried to provide stability to the Sri Lankan innings along with Harshitha Samarawickrama (29), but their efforts were not enough. Nilakshi de Silva played a few shots in her 35-run cameo, but Sri Lanka eventually fell short and lost the match.
Early setback for India
Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl. Their pacer Udeshika Prabodhani struck in the fourth over, removing Smriti Mandhana for just 8. India were under pressure, but Pratika Rawal and Harleen Deol steadied the innings. The pair focused on rotating strike and built a careful stand.
At 43 for 1 in the 11th over, rain forced a delay. Each side lost three overs, reducing the match to 47 overs per innings. Rawal and Deol added 67 runs for the second wicket before Inoka Ranaweera broke through in the 20th over. Rawal departed for 37 off 59 balls.
Ranaweera sparks dramatic collapse
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur came in at No. 4 and tried to lift the scoring rate with Deol. But Ranaweera turned the match on its head in the 26th over. She first dismissed Harmanpreet for 21 off 19 balls, then bowled Jemimah Rodrigues for a duck on the very next delivery.
Ranaweera’s over became even more impactful when she removed Harleen Deol on the fifth ball. Deol had made 48 from 64 but chipped one back to the fielder. India’s promising position of 120 for 2 quickly changed to 121 for 5.
In the following over, Chamari Athapaththu dismissed Richa Ghosh for 2. Within minutes, India had collapsed to 124 for 6.
Deepti and Amanjot stage revival
Just when India looked in trouble, Amanjot Kaur joined Deepti Sharma and played a fearless innings. The pair combined for a game-changing 103-run stand for the seventh wicket. Both batted sensibly, rotated strike, and then attacked loose deliveries.
Amanjot, however, survived four dropped chances on 18, 37, 50, and 53. She made Sri Lanka pay, scoring 57 off 56 balls before Prabodhani dismissed her in the 44th over. By then, India had reached 227 for 7.
Late fireworks lift India
Sneh Rana provided the finishing touch. She blasted an unbeaten 28 from 15 balls, including two sixes and two fours. Deepti anchored the innings until the 47th over, when Achini Kulasuriya finally removed her. India finished on a strong 269 for 8, a total that had seemed unlikely after their mid-innings slump.
Sri Lanka’s chase falters
Chasing 271, Sri Lanka started positively, with Chamari Athapaththu finding rhythm. She scored 43 off 47 balls before Deepti bowled her with a yorker. Vishmi Gunaratne struggled for fluency, making just 11 from 28 before Amanjot trapped her lbw.
Nilakshika Silva gave some hope with a lively 35 off 29, but Rana ended her knock. At 140 for 6 in the 29th over, Sri Lanka’s chase was effectively over.
India’s bowlers share the spoils
India’s bowlers worked well as a unit. Rana, Deepti, and Amanjot all struck at key moments, while Kranti Goud and Shree Charani chipped in with wickets. Sri Lanka maintained around five runs per over for much of the chase, but once Athapaththu fell, their chances of lifting the tempo vanished.
Brief Scorecard
India looked set for only 200 after losing six wickets cheaply. But the Deepti-Amanjot stand, followed by Rana’s late blitz, pushed them close to 270. That total proved far beyond Sri Lanka’s reach, leaving India delighted with contributions from both bat and ball.
Sri Lanka’s biggest regret was their poor fielding. They dropped Amanjot four times, each chance proving costly. Even accounting for a wet ball from intermittent rain, the missed catches allowed India to rebuild after their collapse.
Ranaweera was the standout bowler for Sri Lanka, finishing with 4 for 46 in nine overs. At 39, she also became the oldest bowler to claim a four-wicket haul in a Women’s ODI World Cup. But her brilliance was overshadowed by India’s lower-order fightback. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
