PM Modi Condemns Shoe Attack on Chief Justice BR Gavai, Calls It ‘Utterly Reprehensible’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly denounced the shoe attack on Chief Justice BR Gavai inside the Supreme Court, saying the act has “angered every Indian.”

A dramatic scene unfolded inside the Supreme Court on Monday when a lawyer tried to throw his shoe at Chief Justice BR Gavai during a hearing. The man walked toward the bench and removed his shoe, apparently preparing to hurl it. However, security personnel quickly intervened and stopped him before he could act.

Witnesses said the man shouted, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge” (We will not tolerate the insult of Sanatan). Despite the sudden disruption, Justice Gavai stayed calm and urged everyone to remain focused. He then continued the court proceedings without pause, showing remarkable composure.

PM Modi’s Firm Response

Soon after the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his strong disapproval. He said, “Spoke to Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai Ji. The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable.”

Moreover, the Prime Minister praised Justice Gavai’s calm reaction, saying that his composure reflected his deep commitment to justice and the Constitution.

Background of the Controversy

The shocking event came just days after Justice Gavai’s remarks in another case triggered criticism on social media. The case involved the restoration of a seven-foot beheaded idol of Lord Vishnu at Khajuraho.

While dismissing the petition, Justice Gavai advised the petitioners to “approach the deity directly” and explained that the site was under the Archaeological Survey of India’s jurisdiction. However, his remarks quickly sparked a heated debate online, with several critics claiming that his words hurt religious sentiments.

Calm Amid Controversy

Despite rising tensions and public criticism, Justice Gavai handled the situation with dignity. His calm response during the courtroom disturbance drew praise from legal experts and the Prime Minister alike. Many said his composure symbolized strong judicial leadership during a moment of provocation.
