Ind vs WI | Day 2: Shubman Gill’s Century and Jadeja’s Three Wickets Put India in Command
India dominated Day 2 of the second Test in New Delhi, with Shubman Gill scoring a century and Ravindra Jadeja taking three wickets, leaving West Indies 140/4 and facing a steep challenge.

West Indies were 140/4 at stumps on Day 2 of the second Test in the two-match series in New Delhi. Shubman Gill scored a superb century and remained unbeaten when India declared their first innings at 518/5 around midday. Although West Indies batted better than they did in the first Test at Ahmedabad, India remains in command of the match.

Ravindra Jadeja (3/37) continued to keep the pressure on the visitors. Alick Athanaze top-scored with 41, but West Indies still needed 179 runs to avoid the follow-on. Shai Hope (31*) and Tevin Imlach (14*) were at the crease at the end of Day 2.

Early setback for India

The day began poorly for India when Yashasvi Jaiswal was run out after adding just two runs to his overnight 173. The mix-up happened when Jaiswal hit the ball to mid-off and kept running while Gill turned his back. Frustrated, Jaiswal made his displeasure clear, but the damage was done.

Gill, however, remained calm and made up for the error with elegant strokeplay. He reached his fifth century in just seven Tests as captain, playing with patience and precision.

Reddy and Jurel provide support

Nitish Kumar Reddy, promoted to No. 5 for more batting exposure, scored a quick 43 off 54 balls with two sixes. His knock showed promise, though one risky shot led to his dismissal.

Dhruv Jurel played another composed innings, judging spin well and rotating strike effectively. His wicket prompted India’s declaration.

Gill’s composed hundred

Gill’s batting was marked by timing and control. He handled short deliveries with ease, using short-arm cuts and flicks to keep the scoreboard moving. He reached his half-century with a stylish flick through midwicket and later lifted Justin Greaves for a six.

After completing his hundred, Gill accelerated, scoring 27 runs off the next 19 balls. He declared the innings soon after Jurel was bowled by Roston Chase, the first bowler other than Jomel Warrican to take a wicket.

Gill finished unbeaten, averaging 43.47 in Tests and an impressive 84.81 as captain. His five hundreds in 2025 are the most by any Indian captain in a single year.

West Indies show fight but face uphill task

West Indies’ openers John Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul started confidently but were unlucky. Campbell’s sweep shot deflected off the short leg’s helmet into the fielder’s hands, giving B Sai Sudharsan a painful catch and India an early breakthrough.

Chanderpaul and Athanaze then built the team’s best partnership of the series. They attacked the spinners with calculated shots, but Ravindra Jadeja broke through again. Chanderpaul edged one to first slip, and soon after, Athanaze hit Kuldeep Yadav’s delivery straight to midwicket.

Captain Roston Chase followed with a soft return catch to Jadeja, prompting visible disappointment from legends Viv Richards and Brian Lara, who felt he should have defended.

Shai Hope and Tevin Imlach stayed unbeaten till stumps, but with India’s strong bowling and scoreboard pressure, West Indies faced a tough challenge ahead.
