Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday that he had another “productive” conversation with US President Donald Trump. Both leaders focused on boosting Ukraine’s defences amid rising Russian attacks.
“We covered all the aspects of the situation: defence of life in our country, strengthening our capabilities — in air defence, resilience, and long-range capabilities,” Zelenskyy wrote on X. He said cooperation with Washington remains vital.
The discussion came as Russia launched more overnight strikes on Ukraine’s power grid. Moscow’s goal is to weaken the country’s energy system before winter.
Russia Targets Energy Infrastructure
Kyiv regional Governor Mykola Kalashnyk said two workers from DTEK, Ukraine’s biggest private energy company, were injured in an attack on a substation. The Energy Ministry said power facilities in Donetsk, Odesa, and Chernihiv were also hit.
Zelenskyy accused Moscow of continuing “aerial terror” against Ukraine. “Russia continues its aerial terror against our cities and communities, intensifying strikes on our energy infrastructure,” he said. Over the past week, Russia has launched “more than 3,100 drones, 92 missiles, and around 1,360 glide bombs.”
Zelenskyy Calls for Tighter Sanctions
Zelenskyy urged stronger sanctions on nations buying Russian oil. “Sanctions, tariffs, and joint actions against the buyers of Russian oil — those who finance this war — must all remain on the table,” he said on X.
He also briefed Trump on ongoing talks with US officials over long-range weapons. Ukraine is seeking Tomahawk cruise missiles and more ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles to counter Russian strikes.
US Still Considering Tomahawk Decision
President Trump said he has “sort of made a decision” on whether to send Tomahawk missiles but gave no further details. A senior Ukrainian delegation will visit Washington this week to continue discussions.
Moscow reacted sharply to the possible missile transfer. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Russian television that “the topic of Tomahawks is of extreme concern.” He added, “Now is really a very dramatic moment in terms of the fact that tensions are escalating from all sides.”
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko doubted an immediate move, saying Trump’s approach could be more tactical.
Russia’s Energy Attacks Intensify
Ukraine’s energy system remains a prime target since Russia’s full-scale invasion more than three years ago. Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko said Friday’s strikes, which wounded at least 20 people and caused major blackouts, were “one of the largest concentrated strikes” on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Each year, Russia steps up attacks on power grids before winter, hoping to lower public morale during the coldest months.
Ukraine’s air force said it intercepted or jammed 103 of 118 Russian drones overnight. Russia claimed it shot down 32 Ukrainian drones over its territory.
Kyiv Counts on Western Help
Zelenskyy’s fresh talks with Trump underline Ukraine’s dependence on Western support. Kyiv needs stronger air defences and long-range weapons to resist Russia’s constant strikes.
The attacks on energy sites and the debate over US missile aid show how high the stakes are as winter approaches and the war drags on.
