Two people died after a plane crashed near Hicks Airfield in Tarrant County, Texas, on Sunday afternoon. The crash happened around 1:30 pm local time, according to officials.
Emergency crews found the victims at the scene. A Fort Worth Fire Department spokesperson told The New York Times that the plane hit a parking lot filled with 18-wheeler trailers and campers.
The impact caused a fire, which spread to a nearby commercial building. Videos online showed firefighters fighting heavy flames as thick black smoke rose above the area.
“We thought we were responding to two separate incidents,” the spokesperson told The New York Times. “Later on, we realised it was all part of the same one.”
Fire Contained and Roads Blocked
The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the crash but did not share more details. The Fort Worth Fire Department later told CBS Texas that the fire was under control.
Hicks Airfield, a private airport, sits 16 miles northwest of Fort Worth. Authorities closed both directions of US Route 287 Business after the crash.
Witnesses Describe the Scene
Lois Kinman, a representative of Hicks Airfield, said the plane was not based at the airport. A café worker told WFAA that they heard a loud boom and saw a customer run inside shouting for help. “They told us to call 911,” the witness said. When they went outside, they saw the plane had hit parked trucks.
Another witness, Lauren Anderson, told The New York Times she saw a “giant black cloud of smoke” nearly 100 feet wide. After firefighters arrived, she said the scene “kind of looks like nothing happened.”
“There was probably about a 20- to 30-minute window where it was just nonstop emergency vehicles,” Anderson added.
