England Crush New Zealand by 65 Runs in Second T20I to Take Series Lead
England defeated New Zealand by 65 runs in Christchurch, powered by explosive knocks from Phil Salt and Harry Brook and a strong bowling performance led by Adil Rashid.

England outclassed New Zealand by 65 runs in the second T20I of the three-match series at Christchurch. England produced a stunning batting display and posted a record total of 236 for 4, their highest T20I score at Hagley Oval. Phil Salt smashed 85 off 56 balls, while captain Harry Brook blasted 78 off just 35 deliveries. Their 129-run partnership off 69 balls completely changed the course of the game.

Salt and Brook combined powerful drives with towering sixes, pushing New Zealand’s bowlers on the back foot right from the start. While chasing, New Zealand were bowled out for 171 with two overs remaining. Adil Rashid (4/32 in 4 overs) led England’s bowling attack, while Brydon Carse, Luke Wood, and Liam Dawson took two wickets each. Tim Seifert top-scored for New Zealand, and Mitchell Santner played a quickfire knock, but their efforts were not enough to avoid defeat.

Salt Leads with Explosive Knock

Phil Salt looked in top form again after a quiet outing in the previous match. He began aggressively, hitting Matt Henry’s second ball for six and scoring 20 off nine balls in no time.

Salt’s innings included 13 boundaries, and he looked set for a century before being caught at long-off for 85. Despite missing the milestone, he continued his excellent run in the format, climbing to sixth on England’s all-time T20I run-scorers list with a strike rate of 168.12.

He shared strong partnerships with Jacob Bethell and Brook, playing a secondary but steady role when needed.

Brook Shines as Captain

Harry Brook proved his leadership with a fearless innings. He arrived in the eighth over and started attacking immediately. He hit three consecutive boundaries off Mitchell Santner, including two massive sixes, one over the midwicket roof.

Brook completed his half-century in just 22 balls, later smashing 21 runs in one over from Kyle Jamieson. His clean hitting and confidence showed why he’s England’s new white-ball captain and Test vice-captain.

Brook said earlier, “We’ve got such a strong batting line-up, we can keep going,” — and he lived up to those words with his performance.

England Spinners Seal the Win

In New Zealand’s chase, Brydon Carse struck twice early, removing key batters in the second over. Spinners Adil Rashid (4/32) and Liam Dawson (2/38) took control in the middle overs.

Tim Seifert and Mark Chapman added 69 runs, but once they fell to spin, New Zealand collapsed. Santner tried to fight back with 36 off 15 balls, but Rashid ended his knock to finish a superb spell.

Luke Wood wrapped up the win with two wickets in four balls, as every Kiwi batter was caught out.

Dawson Impresses with Control

Liam Dawson’s smart bowling stood out. He dismissed Chapman and Bracewell, using clever angles and flight. For much of his spell, New Zealand struggled to score against him.

Even though his final over went for 23 runs due to Santner’s late hitting, Dawson’s earlier control made a big difference. His performance strengthened his case for a spot in England’s 2026 T20 World Cup plans.

Brief Scorecard

England (Eng): 236/4 (20)

New Zealand’s sloppy fielding hurt their chances badly. Tim Seifert dropped a tough catch off Bethell, while Jimmy Neesham missed a simple one off Brook. Both chances proved costly — Brook went on to add dozens more runs. These missed opportunities allowed England to dominate and build an unstoppable total. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
