IMD Issues Orange Alert: Heavy Rain Warning for Chennai and Andhra Pradesh as Low-Pressure Area May Become Cyclone Montha
A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal may turn into a severe cyclonic storm named Montha. It will bring heavy rain and strong winds to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Karnataka.

A low-pressure area is forming over the Bay of Bengal. The IMD says it could strengthen into a cyclonic storm and later become a severe cyclonic storm.

If it strengthens, the storm will be called Montha, a name from Thailand meaning “beautiful flowers.” The IMD issued an orange alert for Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Ranipet. These districts may face very heavy rainfall on October 27.

IMD Forecast

The IMD predicts the system will become a depression by October 26. It could intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 27.

The depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal moved west at 7 kmph in six hours. At 11:30 am, it was 460 km west-southwest of Port Blair and 950 km east-southeast of Chennai.

The system will likely move west-northwest. It may become a deep depression by October 26 and a cyclonic storm by October 27 morning.

The IMD added, “It will move northwest, then north-northwest, and become a severe cyclonic storm by October 28 morning.”

Expected Landfall

The storm may hit the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam on October 28 evening or night.

It could bring winds of 90-100 kmph, with gusts up to 110 kmph.

IMD Warnings

On October 28, the IMD issued an orange alert for 10 Odisha districts: Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.

The remaining 20 districts received a yellow warning.

On October 29, six districts—Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Mayurbhanj—remain under orange alert. Ten others remain on yellow alert.

Impact on Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu will receive widespread rain over the next few days. Several districts may face heavy showers. Chennai and nearby areas may get light to moderate rain with isolated thunderstorms on October 26.

Impact on South Karnataka

Bengaluru may see moderate to heavy rain and strong gusty winds due to a twin weather system. The IMD forecasts rain until October 26 and issued a yellow alert.
