India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been hospitalised in Sydney after sustaining a serious rib injury during the third and final ODI against Australia. According to media reports, his parents have applied for an urgent visa to travel to Sydney and be with him. Iyer suffered an injury to his left rib cage while taking a difficult catch to dismiss Alex Carey, which led to internal bleeding.
The impact caused internal bleeding and forced him to leave the field immediately for medical attention. According to media reports, Iyer’s parents have applied for an urgent visa to fly to Sydney to be with him.
Iyer Fainted After Injury
Soon after returning to the dressing room, Iyer fainted. His vital signs dropped sharply, according to a PTI report. The team’s medical staff rushed him to the hospital for emergency scans. Doctors later discovered a “laceration injury to the spleen.” The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed these findings in an official statement on Monday.
BCCI Confirms Spleen Injury
The BCCI said, “Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region... He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well.”
It added, “The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”
As of now, Iyer will stay under medical observation until the end of the week.
Quick Medical Action Prevented a Crisis
The PTI report said that the medical team acted swiftly when Iyer’s condition worsened after he returned to the dressing room. A source revealed, “The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He's a tough lad and should be fine soon.”
Recovery Likely to Take Longer
Initially, doctors expected Iyer to recover within three weeks. However, his recovery might take longer than first estimated. As a result, he could miss India’s upcoming home ODI series against South Africa, starting in mid-November.
The source added, “Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it's difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket.”
The 31-year-old cricketer will likely stay in the Sydney hospital for at least a week before being declared fit to travel back to India.
