President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia had successfully conducted a test of its advanced nuclear-powered submersible drone, Poseidon. He described the weapon as capable of traveling limitless distances underwater, giving Russia a major strategic advantage.
Speaking during a televised meeting with servicemen at a military hospital, Putin said Poseidon is “significantly more powerful” than the country’s most advanced upcoming missile, the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile.
Nuclear-Powered Drone with Unique Design
According to Putin, the Poseidon drone was launched from a submarine and operates on a small nuclear reactor. He noted that this reactor is 100 times smaller than the one used in a regular strategic submarine but delivers immense energy and endurance. Putin said the test highlighted Russia’s technological progress in nuclear propulsion systems, especially in underwater and missile technologies.
Sarmat Missile to Enter Service Soon
Putin also confirmed that Russia’s Sarmat missile system will soon become operational. He described it as a weapon without parallel in the world. “There is no other platform like the Sarmat in the world. We don’t have one on duty yet. But it will go operational soon,” the Russian leader said. The Sarmat missile, capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads, is seen as a key part of Russia’s strategic deterrent program.
Burevestnik Missile Test Adds to Nuclear Showcase
Putin also referred to another recent nuclear test the Burevestnik cruise missile. He said the missile, powered by a miniature nuclear reactor, successfully demonstrated its long-range capability.
“The reactor is a thousand times smaller than that of a submarine and uses electronics developed for space technology,” he said.
Earlier, during a televised briefing with top military officials, Putin revealed that the Burevestnik stayed airborne for 15 hours and covered 14,000 kilometers during successful trials.
Russia Signals Strategic Strength
With these tests, Moscow appears determined to showcase its nuclear and technological strength amid global tensions. Putin’s announcement of back-to-back successful trials highlights Russia’s push to modernize its nuclear arsenal and develop next-generation weapons.
